Handbrake is totally the wrong tool to be using.
Mpeg Streamclip is very stable – its just an interface for Apple’s QuickTime software. That means it doesn’t defeat encryption if the DVDs are copy protected.

Handbrake may be overcoming the encryption, but it transcodes into a file format for iPods or Apple TVs, so if you use it as part of the process to get FCP-editable files you are double-whammy degrading your movies.
There are other rippers that keep the DVD files as Mpeg-2 files that Streamclip handles very well.

Did you transfer the VOBs onto your harddrive before using Streamclip?

Compressor 2,3 is the oldest version that can run under Leopard.
But Software Update won’t update anything earlier than 2.1

Apple issued a pay-for upgrade in about 2006/7 that took FCP 5.0.x up to v5.1- together with the rest of FCStudio, which was the first Intel-compatible version. They publicised this upgrade widely for over a year.

By the time Leopard came out FCP was up to v5.1.4, and Compressor up to v2.3 I think. None of these old versions are available to buy now, although Software Update will still upgrade earlier v5.1stuff to the final versions.

So straight FCP v5.0.x will never have compatibility with Intel-version projects.

For 25fps DV, Less fps is offset by More Vertical Line Resolution.

When I was at school I would then have applied Cleuth’s Constant… 😉
(That’s the variable number you have to multiply your answer by to get the correct result).

In ITU-R BT.601 terms that number is achieved by using a differing non-square pixel aspect ratio for 25 or 29.97fps data streams – x10/11 for 29.97 and x59/54 for 25fps.

So all DV/DVCAM datastreams (29.97 or 25fps) have identical bitrates. 🙂

At the recent FCPUG SuperMeet in London various European User Groups introduced themselves, but I don’t remember any of the specific details.

As far as I know the Bristol WEFCPUG ( https://wefcpug.blogspot.com ), which will celebrate its 5th anniversary in September, remains fairly unique in the UK 🙂

That sounds like FireWire latency. The Apogee and the DV deck are different signal paths, and the time taken to do the video FW transfer to the deck is giving you the offset.

Listen to the audio from the deck’s audio outputs, then everything will retain sync.

There appear to be substantiated indications that a new FCP may come before that, which would mean Leopard-compatible (= more of the same old thing). So the light at the end of the tunnel everybody is waiting for could be FCS 4, due maybe 18+ months after Snow Leopard…

On the bright side, the iPhone can’t exist will all that kludged code that Cory wrote about 🙂
So that will be the motivator for the full rewrite of QuickTime thats begun with QuickTime X player.

(Media Manager can’t be fixed without QT’s metadata structures being ‘fixed’ – thats my guess).
