Here’s some informal quotes from the guy that did the testing, from another forum:
“I have done formal tests on one and found out just what it does. 30Hz is a problem, but not the most significant one (the spectacular spatial aliasing, which makes it very difficult to compress well for broadcast at a sensible bit-rate)
There are lots of things about it that make it a walking disaster.

On my tests of it for the BBC, we stopped early on in the tests because the first results were so disastrous that we didn’t need to complete them.

Its a bit different in the UK….
Away from the print media/video/audio businesses in the cities no one had ever heard of Apple before the iTunes store, and you can’t give a Mac away because no one has the slightest idea how to download ‘free’ software to get it to unzip rars and run .exe files… 🙂

I keep my MDD to use squared5’s driver to run the Pinnacle DC30 card for outputting strange QT movs to tape…

All good points.

But I think it behoves us to be a bit more pro-active.
Apple Inc is the consuner-focussed company that arbitrarily axed the FireWire port from the first unibody MacBook range – and only re-instated it when there was widespread concerted web protest from media-producing Mac users.

This year’s Mac Pro revisions aren’t competitively priced with other manufacturer’s computers (the 2008 models very definitely were), The rumor mill (which of course we ignore) has it that this is a sign of Apple’s accountants arbitrarily (worst case) axing the Mac Pro range a few more years down the line, or (best case) letting the design fester into obsolescence… 🙁

A major ground-up revision of FCS will put those rumors to rest once and for all. 🙂

But my sub-ing the quote down left off the preamble – here’s what they wrote:
…last July, FCS moved to version 3.0 without much advertising campaign. Many users consider this version as incomplete, and according to internal source, the current version 3.0 is tagged as a “temporary/transition”.
The main reason seems to be associated to Snow Leopard release. It seems that one could not integrate all changes expected in FCS 3.0 with Snow leopard development schedule.
So, apparently the really new version should be unveiled by Apple during the NAB 2010 which will take place from April 10 to 15, 2010.
You should consider this information as a rumor as we could not cross-check it with other sources, but it demonstrated its reliability in the past….

So the para I quoted in my first post is a direct follow-up response to this last sentence.
And in the original French there is no reference to the version number of the new NAB version – a case of Lost In (Google’s) Translation 🙂

However there has been a recent quotable snippet which may interest people here:

The entire suite will be written in 64-bits, a must have to improve performance.

FCS 3.0 will require at least 4 GB of RAM in addition to the memory requirement of the system itself. The new suite should be unveiled during the NAB Show (April 10 to 15th), with a availability data expected for mid-2010.
The price should massively increase, around 2,000 USD.

What could an iPhone/iPod Touch-with-a -camera-fitted cope with for editing? Certainly not long-GOP variants…
And what about an iTab(let)?

Just because we know about FCP hereabouts doesn’t mean we know jacksh*t about the toolset of the direct-to-youtube future 😉
But we know about a/v communication – so we can learn! 😉

They wouldn’t normally touch it unless it’s destination is an edit suite to re-edit it.
If its finally mastered its expected to be correctly mixed.
For the BBC, bars/tone at -18dBFS, loud dialogue at around -12dBFS, and maximum level at no more than -10dBFS on FCP-type digital meters, but that might actually be going up a bit more on a properly specified PPM metering system.
