Happens all the time in my old version of FCP,,,
It happens where linked audio is unlinked from its corresponding video once its on the timeline, and slid so the red + or – slippage indicators are visible.If you fetch one of these clips up into the viewer the graphical representation of the audio is out-of-sync garbage.
My workaround is to paste the audio clip into an empty sequence, where the waveform reverts to a correct display, do the edit, then put it back in place of the original.Pain…
Since no one else ever mentions it I assume everyone else works on double-headed audio where they never edit the original camera audio captured with the video out of sync from its picture.With every version of FCP (since v2) I’ve hoped that this bug would have been fixed. I’ve just bought FCS 3 so I live in hope that they’ve done something about it!!!

Logic 9.1 is also fully Intel only, whereas Logic 9.0.x, like FCP 7.0.x is Universal for the most part. -

I have had experience of a ‘disappearing’ movie export, when using a stranger’s Mac.
I could ‘see’ that the exported movie existed – it was there in the list if I reopened the FCP Export dialogue box – visible in the file-structure view of the dialogue box. But I couldn’t retrieve the movie from the Finder – it was effectively invisible.I put this down to an OS X User/permissions and as it wasn’t my computer to fiddle with I just used the workaround of saving my movie again to my own FW drive which had no permissions issues.

Because QT is a slide-show format as well as a video format ‘container’ it accepts individual frames with different duration-settings. FCP can only cope with QT movies that have regular movie-format fps settings.BTW Premiere v3 or v4 in OS 9 days was very happy to have still images on the timeline as just one long-duration frame. But when hardware add-ons like Media 100 came along that flexibility had to be jettisoned.
So your oddly matched QT movies probably have a 15sec frame-length flag for the final frame – which QT player is totally happy with, but FCP ignores.
That’s why – you did ask 😉
It also presumably indicates that the rewrite of all the new NLE-friendly features that QT X needs (and the corresponding rewrite of FCP) is not a trivial matter, as irregular movie frame durations are probably hugely iPhone efficient/friendly… -

Apple are selling the similarly specced Promise SmartStor DS4600 4 drive box as a RAID 5 backup solution for the new Mac mini Server, although they only refer to its FireWire capabilities rather than its eSATA connectivity.

It uses any straightforward eSATA (non-PM) PCIe card for the Mac Pro.
And it seems to be fast enough to use as an edit-capable drive system – in contrast to the much slower software-RAID PM solutions.
However it could be vulnerable to power outages whilst writing RAID 5 parity data, which a full PCIe-type controller could solve by an NVRAM write-cache and battery backup, facilities that the Oxford 936QSE doesn’t provide. So it would need a UPS power source.
Considering the price of 4 x 1TB enterprise drives (which is what Promise specifies) the Apple version is very competitively priced.

Extremely loud LOL!
I live with this daily with FCP 5.1.4 – if a linked (synced) shot is edited with the audio slipped out of alignment the Viewer waveforms are kaput…Every day I think that once I upgrade to a more recent version of FCP it won’t be so.

In just responding to a (so far) unreplied-to post I realise there is another category that defines a ‘basic’ question: Where the questioner doesn’t write/know enough about FCP to get a direct answer – where its unclear if there is a real problem, or whether its just arisen out of a misunderstanding of how the software works.That sort of thread requires a question/answer dialogue before there can be any attempt at giving an appropriate response.
Trouble-shooting is an ‘advanced’ topic, giving a tutorial is ‘basic’… -

Where are you assessing the quality of the DV-NTSC movies with new audio that you are creating in FCP?Because… (as Groucho or Mel Brooks would have said at this time of year its the Santa Because :headbang!)
QuickTime Player always shows you a proper movie display , but for historical reasons FCP doesn’t bother to display codecs like DV at more than quarter-frame resolution in the Canvas.
FCP expects regular movie codecs to be displayed on a regular external TV monitor – and with an older codec like DV it expects an interlaced CRT display.
So does your reedited DV-NTSC look fuzzy on an external interlaced TV screen, fed from either a FireWire link, or through an AJA/BMagic/Matrox breakout box?

Bandwidth needs to be no more than I get with my multiple single-channel setup – all compressed formats.
It is Bob’s ulcer-making long-term data reliability that I was wondering about…
Whether the lack of on-board battery-backup and write-cache ruled this sort of thing out for RAID 5?
