Fuzzy DV-NTSC playback/output in FCP
I’m having a very odd problem with DV-NTSC quicktimes in FCP (6.0.6). These involve footage output from an Avid Media Composer, and happens with quicktimes that are output in either the Avid DNX codec or output from Avid as DV-NTSC (4:3).
The problem is fairly basic: The footage looks terrible and fuzzy, both in playback and when output using DV-NTSC. I’ve tried every conceivable sequence setting (3:2, 4:3, various pixel formats), tried using Compressor, and nothing works.
What’s strange is that Quicktime Pro (7.6.4) plays the original Quicktime files fine, but in FCP they look awful. And if I output the footage as H.264 from FCP, it looks fine as well. Unfortunately, I have to deliver these files as DV-NTSC, and I cannot doing so without creating horribly muddy files.
Doing the conversion in Quicktime Pro is not a possibility, unfortunately, because that works fine and looks good. But I need to swap out the audio tracks before outputting.
