  • OT: sensible uses for old G4’s?

Posted by Adam Taylor on October 23, 2009 at 2:41 pm

I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for making good use of old G4’s?

I have a few knocking about the office gathering dust, and it would be pointless trying to sell them, but seems a shame to chuck ’em.

And please – no silly suggestions, I already use one as a stool in the equipment room!

At my day gig they have an old dual 1GHz G4 set up with Logic Pro, which they use for recording voiceovers. A G4 is plenty snappy enough for dialogue recording/editing.

We have a G4 we use for printing labels and stuff. We also use it for archiving of old footage. We have file maker pro setup on it and we log everything that goes in our tape room so we can get to it quickly if we ever need to.

Although it may not apply to your workflow I still use a G4 Powerbook to capture HDV when the two other intel machines are tied up. No problems.

I also use an old G4 running Peak for capturing voice overs.

If you can’t find a good use for it, how about donating it to a local school, church, Boys & Girls club, etc.? Good karma, you know.

    Hi
Its a bit different in the UK….
Away from the print media/video/audio businesses in the cities no one had ever heard of Apple before the iTunes store, and you can’t give a Mac away because no one has the slightest idea how to download ‘free’ software to get it to unzip rars and run .exe files… 🙂

I keep my MDD to use squared5’s driver to run the Pinnacle DC30 card for outputting strange QT movs to tape…

I used to use ours for our FTP server running Rumpus FTP server software. It was loaded with a small raid setup and a gigabit e-card and it worked great.

An yes, I’ have used another one for a stool our dupe room.
