October 21, 2009 at 1:32 amHey guys,
I like to keep a low profile on this forum and focus on positively trying to help answer some questions related to Adobe. However, i thought this worth posting here as some information for your perusal.
In a nutshell, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects are moving to 64-bit native on both Mac and PC platforms. To find more, check out the links below.
First there’s my own blog entry:
https://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/10/its_official_64bit_is_the_futu.html#moreWe’ve also got one on ProVideo Coalition:
https://provideocoalition.com/index.php/adobe/story/the_future_is_64_bit/One more…The Adobe FAQ:
https://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/production/faq/I’ll likely have one more bit of information to post in the next few days.
Cheers,

Quote from your blog:
…why is Adobe announcing this now, so far in advance of anything? The answer is you my friends. We want to make sure that you’re aware of where we’re going and that if you have any thoughts about upgrading in the future, that you have the necessary time to get ready for it….Apple doesn’t work that way – for better or worse 😉
However there has been a recent quotable snippet which may interest people here:
…related to the future suite of Final Cut Studio, we have received additional information.
…the suite is being entirely re-written and its interface will be deeply modified. First, all applications forming the suite will not be indepedent as currently, be integrated inside a single super-application.The main interface will be using the concept of rooms, where each room represents a step in the post-production workflow associated to each application – similar to the Logic Interface.
Several additional changes have been made on the interface, especially for the Viewer and the Timeline.
One will be able to export project in DVD, 2K, 4K and of course Blu-ray.The entire suite will be written in 64-bits, a must have to improve performance.
FCS 3.0 will require at least 4 GB of RAM in addition to the memory requirement of the system itself. The new suite should be unveiled during the NAB Show (April 10 to 15th), with a availability data expected for mid-2010.
The price should massively increase, around 2,000 USD.

As for Adobe moving to 64 bit, wonder if this means Encore will actually work with BluRay or if 64 bits means it will blow up even more spectacularly than it does in its current incarnation.

Hi
Indeed. 🙂
But my sub-ing the quote down left off the preamble – here’s what they wrote:
…last July, FCS moved to version 3.0 without much advertising campaign. Many users consider this version as incomplete, and according to internal source, the current version 3.0 is tagged as a “temporary/transition”.
The main reason seems to be associated to Snow Leopard release. It seems that one could not integrate all changes expected in FCS 3.0 with Snow leopard development schedule.
So, apparently the really new version should be unveiled by Apple during the NAB 2010 which will take place from April 10 to 15, 2010.
You should consider this information as a rumor as we could not cross-check it with other sources, but it demonstrated its reliability in the past….So the para I quoted in my first post is a direct follow-up response to this last sentence.
And in the original French there is no reference to the version number of the new NAB version – a case of Lost In (Google’s) Translation 🙂

October 21, 2009 at 12:49 pmI really have no need for rumor sites. I’m still waiting for Final Cut Extreme to be released. That was announced 3 years ago on some rumor site.
People who live by the rumor sites are disappointed 95% of the time when whatever is “supposed” to be coming out doesn’t. Not a great way to run a business. Apple has shown in recent years they really don’t follow the NAB mold anymore, they release the software when they feel it’s ready with whatever updates they feel are necessary.
When I see what they have to release, then I consider whether it’s worth investing in our facility at that time. Just like Snow Leopard. It’s here but not running on any of our editing systems at this time.

October 21, 2009 at 1:19 pmAll good points.
But I think it behoves us to be a bit more pro-active.
Apple Inc is the consuner-focussed company that arbitrarily axed the FireWire port from the first unibody MacBook range – and only re-instated it when there was widespread concerted web protest from media-producing Mac users. This year’s Mac Pro revisions aren’t competitively priced with other manufacturer’s computers (the 2008 models very definitely were), The rumor mill (which of course we ignore) has it that this is a sign of Apple’s accountants arbitrarily (worst case) axing the Mac Pro range a few more years down the line, or (best case) letting the design fester into obsolescence… 🙁
A major ground-up revision of FCS will put those rumors to rest once and for all. 🙂
My 2p – the linked topic of this thread, after all, is “to make sure that you’re aware of where (Adobe is) going and …if you have any thoughts about upgrading in the future…”

Better yet, why not make each step a “place”! for motion you go “across town” to “Vinny at the Optical Shop” for sound over to “Howie at the Mix Place” for review you go to “Standards and Practices” and “anyone who is walking the halls at the agency” or “the clients nephew who just graduated film school” for distribution you go to “berts dubs” and “the TV station that never looks at the color bars”. 🙂
I’m sorry, but give me an effin break….rooms…please. 🙂
Just make the app have better keyframeing, mixing, effect grouping, submastering, and output, and there is no need for “rooms”.
ie:
(Warning: the following analogy is laced with old school terminology!):
A big air conditioned edit suite w 4 D1 machines, a 3 ME switcher, dual Chyron, ADO, Kaliedoscope, Harry, Spirit Telecine, Davinci, SSL mixer, digital 48 track, Axial controller and 3 of each 2″ 1″ 3/4″ and VHS duplicatorrs.
Except its all non-linear, HD, and it all works as it supposed to. Thats what i would want to see in a 2,000 $US NLE
I love wednesdays!

You don’t want D-1 machines in your suite! You need either D-5 or Digital Betacams so you can Pre-read. My choice for switcher: Abekas A-83. I know it’s just an analogy but it does bring back memories, when being an Post Editor actually meant something.

But Walter, you missed the most important part of the rumor (lost in translation)!
