  • Migrating to FCS3 – Flummoxed on Choice of Mac Pro. New Nehalem or Used Old Series Intel?

Just bought FCS3. I’ve been a long-time CS Windows user but time has come to really make a port over to Final Cut. I’m absolutely bamboozled as to what Mac Pro Platform to get. I don’t want to spend too much but I don’t want a platform that hamstrings FCP3.
Should I take the plunge and get:

    1. 8-core 2.66 Nehalem Mac Pro?
    2. …or a simpler new Quad-core 2.66 Nehalem?
    3. …or a used (eBay) previous generation 2.66, 2.8 or 3.0 Mac Pro?

Apple really ought to make the differentiation between the newer Nehalem 2.66 and the older 2.66 series platforms. It’s very hard to see what sellers are actually selling.

    Any advice appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Peter

We just purchased the the top of the line Mac Pro, 16GB Ram, ATI 4870 card here.

Depending on the tests that are run, the slowest of the new Mac Pro’s can run faster than the fastest of the older series Mac Pro, which coincidentally we have that here as well…..

    Peter,

I just upgraded 2 suites from G5 systems.

what I found practical to do was get the Nehalem 8-core mac pro, BUT not
    the fastest mhz version.

I bought 2.66ghz versions and saved a thousand bucks by not getting the 2.93ghz one.

300mhz of clock speed was not worth it to me for the subtle edge it would have.

You really should be looking into the Nehalem 8-core machine though.

    I’m now looking at a 2.26 8-core or an older 3.0 Quad. Decisions, decisions…

Actually the new Quad only has four RAM slots. No good for me.
