help! I am trying to commence a project for a client making a trailer for a dvd box set. they have sent me the actual DVDs. so i tried to convert them using mpegstreamclip innitially but this was not working at all as it was slow and crashing. sooo then i tried using handbrake and to convert them into avi files and from there trying to use mpeg streamclip to convert them into a usable format to edit in fcp. now this is new to as Im used to uploading tapes on very uncomplicated settings..

    so my question is

can I convert AVI files in mpegstream clip into a good format to edit in fcp?

and what setting in mpeg stream clip should I use for this?! (same as my sequence settings in fcp?)

the brief tells me the end project will be used as a trailer on a website if that helps.

    many thanks

    Hi
Handbrake is totally the wrong tool to be using.
Mpeg Streamclip is very stable – its just an interface for Apple’s QuickTime software. That means it doesn’t defeat encryption if the DVDs are copy protected.

Handbrake may be overcoming the encryption, but it transcodes into a file format for iPods or Apple TVs, so if you use it as part of the process to get FCP-editable files you are double-whammy degrading your movies.
There are other rippers that keep the DVD files as Mpeg-2 files that Streamclip handles very well.

Did you transfer the VOBs onto your harddrive before using Streamclip?

no i didnt do that. i clicked file open dvd and tried to do it fromthere. how would i try to transfer the VOBs? i think the encryption might be the thing that prevented the one disc from working.

disc one: i pressed’open file’ and it popped up an error message saying it could not detect vobs though they were there…

disc two: it appeared to begin the conversion but then froze on the ‘preparing window’ and the ‘beachball of death’ spun in rotations for about an hour before i gave up that attempt…

    Hi tel,
    I agree with Paul.
Avoid the AVI way and try to make work MPGStreamclip.

Recently, with some DVDs (corporate, professionally replicated) MPEG Streamclip was unable to export. The DVD file structure is visible, but when I try to export a VOB it fails. I ended up playing out of a DVD player and capturing that. I thought it might be some form of copy protection, but nothing was noted on the label or case about that. I’d love to find out what’s going on with this. It’s happened a couple of times.

Guys trust ne when I say.I hate AVI more then Sunday lunch with the in-laws BUT I recently transcoded over 500 DVDs with handBrake with fantastic results – I did do over 150 titles is mp4 and some would work done would not – these titles are for pitch and mood reels only so they won’t play in real time – BUT compared to transcode of certain parts to ProRes rguawirk for us – I sing and dance to handbrake ONLY with AVI trust me it pains me to type the letters let alone endorse it !

    Craig,

Neither AVI files nor MP4 files operate as realtime codecs within FCP. So, the fact that you had “fantastic results” with Handbrake really is essentially meaningless to anyone seeking to do properly and efficiently rip video from a DVD for further editing in FCP.

The facts are, Handbrake only outputs MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM files and MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora codecs. Streamclip will output to any Quicktime file or codec. So, why would any knowledgeable editor want to use Handbrake when Streamclip is available for free?
