FCP 5 Intel concern
I have spoken with Apple directly. I have purchased a new Macbook Pro with Intel and it runs Leopard. What I have been told is this OS will not support Compressor 2 and that I need to upgrade to Final Cut 2009. Currently everytime I attempt to use Compressor I get “Unable to connect to background process”. I queried the forum the other day and received some good feedback on Compressor before finding out about the OS issue. The challenge is that if I upgrade to FCP 2009 my file projects from FCP 5 will be incompatible with my G5 tower (3 years old). What I am doing is logging & capturing to my Macbook as all of the rest of my FCP 5 Suite works in the Macbook. I then just move the external drive to edit to the G5 where Compressor works. Based on the different OS and the Intel based Macbook Pro, I am going to ask the forum today if this is OK to do without concern for file corruption.

Apple issued a pay-for upgrade in about 2006/7 that took FCP 5.0.x up to v5.1- together with the rest of FCStudio, which was the first Intel-compatible version. They publicised this upgrade widely for over a year.By the time Leopard came out FCP was up to v5.1.4, and Compressor up to v2.3 I think. None of these old versions are available to buy now, although Software Update will still upgrade earlier v5.1stuff to the final versions.
So straight FCP v5.0.x will never have compatibility with Intel-version projects.

I am operating FCP 5.02 I believe. It operating fine on my Intel. However, Compressor 2 will not be supported on Leopard. This is what Apple told me.

Compressor 2,3 is the oldest version that can run under Leopard.
But Software Update won’t update anything earlier than 2.1 -

You should be using FCS3 with FCP6 on both computers. Period, end of story.

How do I get just that update David? They have told me the update is FCP 2009. Is there an update for just FCP 6 FCS3?

FCS2 is still available on the Web if you look around and ask around, or you may have to buy it on Ebay. The bottom line is, it will work on both computers, but nothing else will.

FCS2 and/or 3? Your 1st post said FCS3. Thx for the help David!

I agree with David fully. If you are using Final Cut Pro as your sole means of income and you are now in a position that you have to upgrade. Upgrading to FCS2 will cost you more for one system than to upgrade to the newest FCS3 for both.
I think it was $499 for upgrading from 5.14, but anything else was $699. Now, the FCS3 has an upgrade price of $299 for ANY version of Final Cut. Do the math…
Eventually we all have to be current with software. Now is your time.

Wayne his old machine is a G5, so he cannot run FCS3 on it. FCS3 is Intel only.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
