FCP 5 Intel concern

Correct, I had a typo and meant to say FCS2 and FCP6 in my post. FCP6 is the only version that will work on both Jim’s G5 and his new MacPro, so whatever the cost, that’s the best solution for him now if he wishes to continue using both computers for editing on a single project.

I meant to say FCS2 with FCP6 on both computers. That’s your only hope of using the same software on both computers.

Do you think there be any problem with capturing to an external drive on the Intel and then working with the drive on the G5 IE: codec issues? Will the Leopard or intel cause any conflict with the G5? I ask because this way I can use Compressor on the G5 for projects. My concern is corrupting the G5 which is a dedicated suite with a lot of vital current templating. I have backed up. I just want to avoid any problems if possible. Also, if i want to buy the FCS 3 FCP 6 upgrade where can I do it?

I am aware of that.

But you have to look at this in this manner. If this is your bread and butter, what’s more important to you, work arounds or time saving features that may make you more money.

I understand the economy and how its affected everyone but times are tough and you need to find something that makes you look better to your clients. Its a risk but that’s business.

Jim, there should be no issue capturing with one version of FCP and editing on an older version. As long as you stay away from new codec, if you get FCP6 for the MBP you don’t want to be capturing ProRes since FCP5 doesn’t have that codec, but to capture DVCProHD you can go back and forth without issue. If you do basic editing on the MBP you can use xml to get the edits into FCP5.

As with everything we do a little forethought goes along way. Think through and test the process and you can make it happen. If you are not swapping projects back and forth I would go up to FCS3 for the MBP to get Compressor 3 and save the money. IF you want to be going back and forth with full projects then FCP6 on both is the way to go.

I say upgrade to the new FCS3 and edit with your new MacBook Pro. That laptop is acutlay faster then your old G5.

I capture from a Sony DSR 11 unit or our SONY DSR camera to MBP. It currently runs all FCP 5 software excepting Compressor 2. All I really need the MBP for is to capture in the field to save time on projects coming home from the field. I have already been able to use the external drive I save to in order to use Compressor on the G5. I think the FCP 6 is a good option. It sounds like what you are saying is FCP 5 on the MBP and on the G5 will be fine to take external back and forth. Will this be the same for Live text and/or Motion projects (any other FCS software?

When you buy FCS2 or 3,do you have the right to install on as many computers as you want?
I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that for the purchase price, you were paying for one license use.
I saw several posts in this thread recommending using one license copy on several computers, technical issues aside.
Any thoughts on this?

my understanding is that when you buy a license you may use it on a tower and a laptop if you own both cpu’s.
