Merge clips a total disaster. After post-syncing double-system sound with translations, delighted to use the nifty Synchronize Clips feature, which was flawless and quick. Then Merged all into a Merged Clip so I could carry the translation along, make subclips, and edit the doc, with the intention of eventually dropping in the mixed audio and finished VO tracks.
At this point, all timecode went haywire. Overlay TC showed a different TC that was embedded in the V1 file. There is no matching back to Source. You can track it down with properties if you want to confirm that the TC is incorrect. Spent hours tracking back source files and sequences to confirm the true TC and try to get the software to display correct code. No dice. Sad, because I was on the cusp of going entirely PP going forward, but this is an amateurish failing.
This project is too big and too deep for this level of nonsense. So I exported XML of everything and opened in FCP7 — now at work, TC locked, editing. Really too bad. PP is prettier and faster, but the code is ugly.

I agree with all of this, except I might use Cinema Tools to change the frame rate, conforming it to the 23.98. It does this very quickly. But I don’t get the sense that people use CT very often.

Yes, just set in and out points for your desired range, and FCP will export that part of your sequence.

Hi – I am using Clip Browser but I am puzzled by one thing: in the export menu, there are choices besides MXF for NLEs etc., such as small h264 files — but none of these, including the Native DV option, retains the Time Code. Is there a way to get the time code into those smaller movies, so one could edit these in a portable set-up with less storage, for matching back to hi res at a later date?
thanks – Paul

Hi — sometimes I find that exporting a standalone movie from the timeline and re-importing can do an end-around the HDV render blues…there are other issues of course but for graphics and AE renders it really speeds things along.
Good Luck — Paul

January 13, 2009 at 10:55 pm in reply to: MEDIA OFFLINE: If I didn’t delete it who did? (SOS)Hi — You can always go into your autosave and pull up a saved project that precedes your foray into Soundtrack. Your clips should be present there — and if you haven’t emptied your trash, check in there.
Good luck – Paul

Hi — Just for the record I have the latest Avid MC and also the latest FCS installed and working fine on my Macbook Pro and Intel iMac. Previous version of Avid works fine on my Dual G5 along with FCS. No problems at all working with either tool, independent of each other. No dual boot or partitions.
They fight over the firewire port so don’t run them at the same time if you have a firewire deck connected. Without a deck I can have them both open. Call me crazy but I’ve had to do this for legacy projects.
The Avid is more picky about the graphics card installed so be careful there. Otherwise just install the software and get to work with the tool you need for the job.
cheers, Paul

These problems are beyond abnormal. Why have you not posted your system specs during any part of this thread? Avoiding the FCP forum has not served you well either, as you might have found answers that go a little further than those coming from your friends. If you are at a facility, get an engineer to look at your system. If not, do it yourself. Your problems have nothing to do with editing styles, or editing software. Your problems are smack in the OS.

Hi — actually, I had recommended Sebsky only if you wanted to take a crack at converting the bins. You could also do this with a text editor. But from what you describe, there would be no need, and I am afraid it would cause you problems. Shane’s advice is of course succinct and correct, but it doesn’t sound like an option for you, for many reasons.
Avid handles 24fps just fine, especially a MC. What you have created are select reels. Your EDLs are probably fine as they are. Forget trying to reconnect to the files. Just import the EDL(s) into your MC and digitize the sequence as Avid media files, and start cutting.
good luck – paul

Hi there — Avid will not look at those clips unless they are Avid clips. If you simply convert them, you will lose your time code info, and yes, you will take a quality hit. Media Composer will do 24fps, it just doesn’t like your format. If you only have 2 hrs of material. your best bet is to create a 24fps project, import the EDL(s) or the bins, and re-digitize the material. 2-3 hrs max, about the time it will take you to sort this out with some other kind of workaround.
To convert the bins, check out Sebsky Tools — it works great and costs nothing.
Good luck!
