MEDIA OFFLINE: If I didn’t delete it who did? (SOS)
Ok, so I’m working away in FCP and I finish a scene. I export the thing to Soundtrack and as sometimes happens, Soundtrack just opens a new project with nothing in it. I flip back over to FCP and the files I had exported and “smoothcam” filtered show as offline. I can’t reconnect as they’re gone.
I’m irritated, but I go ahead and fire up the original clips to re-insert the video and guess what?
The originals in the list are missing. Labeled as “Cold Room IV + numeric value, only certain ones are missing, but of course all the crucial ones. They aren’t in the trash and the search doesn’t find them (yes, I included EVER drive).
So here I am in the middle of a snow storm, with the tapes elsewhere (for safety) and I’m stuck. Where did they go? Can I get them back?
I’ve wondered about the possibility that smoothcam or soundtrack renamed the originals, but would they be called?
Any help would be appreciated. I’m… unhappy.

Can you naviagte to the Capture Scratch folder and see if it’s there?

I have more than one as the project spans multiple HD’s. Search won’t look in those folders?

It should, but it’s best to go looking for it just to be sure.

Jason,
To quickly find the clips – right-click on an offline clip and select the first option from item properties. This will tell you where the clip last lived when it was connected to your machine. It will also tell you the actual file name of the clip.

Tried it out, and manually going there, it’s just not there. I did a recovery (using some $100 program, grrr.) and found one of the six, but with a different name (like totally different) – qt005601.mov (along those lines, not exactly right).
So I’m stumped. I just know I haven’t deleted anything, so unless the program performed a deletion or changed the filename, I don’t know what to do, and I can’t recapture the footage anytime soon, either.
Any other pointers/ideas?

Hi — You can always go into your autosave and pull up a saved project that precedes your foray into Soundtrack. Your clips should be present there — and if you haven’t emptied your trash, check in there.
