I think Jamal is also asking about using LUT for previewing in another color space (or gamut, sRGB in this case) than the primary delivery format (Rec 709 in this case). IMHO, this is very important practice to have extra preview monitor(s) for different color spaces unless I’m allowed or paid to perform multiple rounds of grading just for any additional delivery formats.

Just for this purpose, our team is preparing a color management pipeline which includes top-of-the-line hardware and softwares. Our aim is to be able to match all in-house monitors as close as possible and to generate and utilize color space conversion LUT’s.

As for the use of LUT in Resolve for Red material, I also grade in Redcolor2/Redlogfilm with Arri Log to Rec709 3D LUT as input LUT at the project level. It is no doubt that Redlogfilm offers much more useful range than any other gamma space Red has to offer in grading environment. Very rarely, I do grade without the LUT if I feel like the LUT is limiting the range of the footage. However, I can’t argue with how effective it is to use the LUT since it really speeds me up.

Happens to me as well.. Renders are fine, but sometimes I like to spot check my grade while rendering.

Even my Mac Pro with three 4000 + 4870 crashes every now and then. Save button is your only
trusted friend. However, I just finished a 100 min feature on my system without splitting the project.
I had “Resolve is running out of memory” error towards the end of the project, but creating a new
database just for that project did the trick. To repeat, “save” button is your best friend on any system.

As for the tutorial, I found the “Resolve Fundamentals with Warren Eagles” from FXPHD to be very easy
to follow, and it should get you started very nicely.

    Cheers,

By the way, I wasn’t saying that I dislike the node approach for grading. Actually, I find myself rather enjoy this whole node thing by now after using it for three weeks. I think I now have the hang of it, and I think it makes quite sense when I do certain tasks that I had never thought of before. If BM takes away this node thing from me, I can live with that. But I think I will miss it.

Back on topic, I think what Sascha is showing us is a pretty good demonstration of how one can approach this node structure, not what one should do in every job, IMHO. After a couple weeks of learning the tool, I started building my own set of Power Grades with different labels that are pretty close to what Sascha is doing. However, I just don’t save the whole tree to apply on every shot I do. When I need a mask, for example, I bring in just that from the Power Grade room, which is already pre-labeled. Later on when I revisit a certain grade, I can tell what’s happening on each node, since they are already all pre-labeled.

Of course, I don’t really have a power grade that says “Primary” 🙂

Only if Color had unlimited secondary rooms.. 🙂 But still I’d rather have better performance than better UI anyday for serious jobs.

Just about when I’m almost getting used to this whole node grading thing.. ha. Like Jake said, I hate to revisit to a shot only to have no clue what I did on what node. Nevertheless, I will let the system dictate my workflow this time, since I’m liking it so much 🙂

  • Hi Danny,

Thanks for your input! Yes, I’d hate to disable each node to on/off my grade, so I should be happy with what we have for now 🙂

I will try your suggestion for switching sides on wipe. Thanks a ton for the suggestion. I usually toggle on/off stills for A/B comparison, but when I try to use the wipe I realize it’s on the wrong side 🙂

    Happy grading!

July 26, 2011 at 9:02 pm in reply to: 2008 Mac Pro RT Performance with DaVinci

I’m running the Resolve on a 2008 machine with 16GB ram, ATI 4870 for GUI, 3 x Q4000, Red Rocket, Extreme HD SDI out, 16 drive FC raid6, and a 480GB SSD for the system drive. I get real-time playback for R3D’s with no grade, but I get about 10fps to 20fps with more than three nodes. I set the source decoding setting to be the “Half Good” while grading and switch it to “Full High” for rendering. I also set the monitor out as 10bit.

I believe my bottle neck is the CPU’s, and I’m planning on replacing it with whatever Apple brings out this year. If they don’t in about a month, I will have to go with a 2010 machine 🙁
