  • My first two weeks impression on Davinci Resolve and some questions.

Posted by Nook Kim on July 26, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Have been using the Resolve 8.0 for about two weeks. I’m a lot more comfortable with it now than two weeks ago, and I must say the Resolve is very well thought out grading tool with exceptional quality sets of secondary options. Of course, having a few training sessions helped a lot to get to know the tool.

Just some minor things I’d like to address are:

    1. To toggle grade on/off, do I have one stroke other than down-shit + Disable Current? I’m aware of the up/down arrows on keyboard. I’m just trying to eliminate visits to keyboard as much as I can.

    2. Can I have buttons for switching through different versions? When I want to compare version 2 and 7 on a shot, it’s time consuming to hit through Prev Version and Next Version. How about Current + Numbers on the Numeric Pad or something like that?

    3. How do I switch the sides on the reference still and the current grade in wipe mode? I’ve read through the manual about this, but it was a bit confusing since the button layout the manual refers is different to the actual button layout on the panel.

    4. Do you Resolve guys have plans to support more data compatibility in the future? I’d love to have
TGA render out option on the next upgrade, please.

This has been amazing two weeks on my Resolve. I don’t know how I could live without some of the tool sets of Resolve before.

    Thanks,

People are still using TGA ? wow.

And it sounds you are in the game for a panel, all those thing exist as buttons on both the cheap ones and of course the big ones too.
As limiting visits to the keyboard goes, the panel is your friend.
At least get a G13 for everything hotkeyable.

G13 is definitely a beast. I assigned some mouse clicks to the joystick, and can now scroll through all the curves tabs quickly.

    Hi Sascha,

I guess you don’t use the Davinci panel as my original post refers to some of the buttons on my Davinci panel. It’s a very capable panel, but it’s missing quite a few “hot keys” that I’d like to have. Maybe I can assign what I need to different button combo’s. I will read through the manual to see if I can find the how-to.

    Hi Vladimir,

I’d hate to have yet another controller besides my Davinci Panel, though.

toggle grade on/off with the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard. I only that was on ctrl-up & ctrl-down, and that I could move between nodes with the arrow keys.

Hi Nook, I agree with the request in question 2……

The disable current using down shift is actually a new feature, before then you had to turn off the nodes individually so heading in the right direction on that one!

Also – “3. How do I switch the sides on the reference still and the current grade in wipe mode? I’ve read through the manual about this, but it was a bit confusing since the button layout the manual refers is different to the actual button layout on the panel.”

If you go to the settings and make sure the still wipe is set to wraparound, you can then use the central scroll wheel above the play controls to get the wipe happening from the opposite side.

    Little slow but works fine.

    Hi Danny,

Thanks for your input! Yes, I’d hate to disable each node to on/off my grade, so I should be happy with what we have for now 🙂

I will try your suggestion for switching sides on wipe. Thanks a ton for the suggestion. I usually toggle on/off stills for A/B comparison, but when I try to use the wipe I realize it’s on the wrong side 🙂

    Happy grading!

    Ups, sorry, you are right.
Down shift + disable current is a far stretch, I agree.
Also clickclickclick for the versions can be tiring.
And to mirror the Wipe I also use Shift W on the keyboard.
And yes, I am not using the big panel at the moment and have all those mapped to the G13 which proves very capable again.

[Nook Kim] “1. To toggle grade on/off, do I have one stroke other than down-shit + Disable Current? I’m aware of the up/down arrows on keyboard. I’m just trying to eliminate visits to keyboard as much as I can.”

Under the Lift/Black control trackball, there are 3 buttons that have no function yet. I think DaVinci guys can make that buttons for this one-stroke shortcut.

[Nook Kim] “2. Can I have buttons for switching through different versions? When I want to compare version 2 and 7 on a shot, it’s time consuming to hit through Prev Version and Next Version. How about Current + Numbers on the Numeric Pad or something like that?”

You can try save your version 2 to memory A and version 7 to memory B and just switch between A or B memory to compare (that’s one push of a button). Or you also can use ‘Preview Mem’ to toggle the grades.

[Nook Kim] “3. How do I switch the sides on the reference still and the current grade in wipe mode? I’ve read through the manual about this, but it was a bit confusing since the button layout the manual refers is different to the actual button layout on the panel.”

On your transport panel there is a ‘Jog Rotary Control’. So when you’re in the ‘play still’ mode, you just rotate the jog control all the way to the left or right until you see the wipe move to the left and show up from the right or vice versa.

    Best,
    Peace Villow
