Well, I think the Auto-Trace-Tool in Illustrator works fairly well
as long as one uses simple shapes.
If one has more complex shapes either the Pen-Tool or the Pencil-Tool
would be the -
First, I am still using Illustrator CS 1, therefore CS 2 might have much
more advanced features here.Try Object/Envelope Distort/Make with Mesh/
choose the Rows and Colums you need
and move the points and handles.Cheers

Well, if you spike your sphere with a few cylinders in your choosen size –
maybe group the cylinders in a null and increase the segments in the sphere
maybe to 48 – put them all in a Boole-Object (the sphere in first position) –
either A subtract B or A without B.
I find the holes look very -
For the outer “coating” you could try the technique
used in the Maxon -
I presume this is only possible in Top- Right- and Front-View.
Choose one of those and in that Viewport go to Edit/Configure…
tick the Back-Tab and import your picture.Cheers
