    Hi everyone,

I’m new in 3d and need to decide which path/software to follow.

I have the impression that Maya is something versatile(strong in character animation, modelling) but with a relatively slower renderer. Cinema4D is simple and effective, has the shortest learning curve among major 3d softwares. And 3D Max is more like general software but with strong particle systems and faster renderer, and a bit more complicated to get on grips with than Cinema4D.

Because my personal interest is more in “motion typographics”(with minimum interest in sophiscated/photorealistic modelling and character animation) that involves typographical manipulation(such as light effect of 3d typography) and simplistic 3d modelling, I am thinking Cinema4D is the best one for me to take on with. Also it seems C4D is the fastest/requiring lower computer configuration.

Would anybody pls let me know if my knowledge of these softwares is correct, and kindly give any opinions about my choice?

    many thanks!

I will probably like to do things like these:

these are made in Cinema4D, but I would like to know if it’s easier to do this in other programs.

I think your assessment is pretty accurate, except that Max’s render engine isn’t faster than Cinema’s. Of course being a C4D user I’m probably biased. Go to a Max forum and they’ll tell you Max is best. Go to a Maya forum and they’ll tell you Maya is best.

Your best bet is to download the demos and try them yourself.

Hi, adam thanks for the reply.
I looked at a maya animation tutorial the other day and it looks so intuitive.
I’m wondering if C4D is as easy to do animation(not complicated character animaion) with as MAYA is?

All of the apps you mentioned are totally capable. I personally find C4D the easiest to learn of those and I think a lot of users would put UI at the top of their likes about C4D too.

I should think it’s actually a lot more intuitive.

…c4d base/advanced render/tgp and proanimator 4 — these programs with AE can quickly and efficiently create NICE text animation….

Proanimator allows you to hammer out animation quick right in AE.
Cinema allows you to take it a step further with photorealistic renders if need be.
You must remember though, that a lot of post houses aren’t using c4d yet. Or atleast thats what I’ve been noticing — in my neck of the woods (philadelphia area) they’re all about lightwave/maya.
