Try a 3D-Linear Gradient and play with the Start and End settings.
Adjust the Gradient Slider to your liking… -

Well, I am using the NVIDIA 346.02.03f01 Driver / Cinema R17 / OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite.
So far, everything works pretty marvellous. The odd “freeze” with some Materials.
Specially the Concrete Materials from the Preset Folder causing issues.Not sure, if the OS X Default Graphic Driver works any better ?

In the Preset Folder / Prime / Materials / Misc…
Try the Anisotropic Radial 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 Materials…
If necessary, customize their settings in the Attributes Manager… -
Either, use an Atom Array…
Or, make your Pyramid Editable / select all edges / Edge to Spline.
Create a Rectangle (or else) in a suitable size.
Drag the Rectangle (first position) and the Pyramid.Spline into a Sweep Nurbs.
Adjust the Sweep Nurbs- / Rectangle-settings to your liking.. -
With your Edges selected, try “Bevel”, Subdivision to 5, Type to Convex…
