There’s never going to be a definitive archiving solution either. The issue of archiving has been around since the dawn of computing. My suggestion would be to define your needs- budget, network access, storage format, ease of reuse, volume, etc. That would help guide you toward one of the solutions like HD or DLT which have been around much longer than P2.

I suggest heading over to the HVX200 forum. These cameras are not meant to be compared in any way though. Yes the HVX shoots SD and can be downcoverted to SD and will look nicer than the DVX shooting in SD. But the whole point and reason why it costs nearly twice as much as so you can shoot HD in 720p and 1080i.

Cam settings should be fairly neutral- you want thin Vdetail and don’t crank up skin detail or sharpness too much. The key to good composites in DV is really really excellent lighting. So make sure you have someone on set with lots of greenscreen lighting experience. A well-lit greenscreen is fairly easy to comp in DV. An adequately lit one is a nightmare. You probably should not be shooting 25pN if you’re working with Avid- though it depends what flavor of Avid. Shoot regular 25p and see if it turns out better.

Exactly- peek into the manual about 16:9 anamorphic DVD authoring. It will look a lot better than 4:3 letterbox. Quick background on why this is so:

That’s as good as it gets for Motion. Otherwise I’d suggest Ultimatte for FCP or Keylight which comes with AfterEffects or Shake. If you’re doing a lot of greenscreen you’ll have a better time with one of those. Motion is very capable as an occasional green screen compositor, but it can’t fully compete with the control you have in a dedicated app.

Are you outputting to DV NTSC, how will it be played back? Please let us know your SD settings- we can’t see your computer from here. DVDs can be encoded at 16:9 native BTW.
