Panasonic DVX-100b VS HVX-100
Hey there!
I’m stuck between buying a Panasonic DVX100b and an HD HVX100 and I was hoping to get some opinions on the 2. The camera will be used to tape everything from weddings/birthdays to shorts and Indies and I know I’ll be using it for at least the next 5 years so I want to make sure that I get something worthwhile.
I was wondering if anybody has tested out the HVX100? When the HD is down-rezzed for DVD, is the quality worse than an SD camera like the Canon XL2? Also does anybody know how the HVX100’s SD taping compares to most cameras in the market?

I suggest heading over to the HVX200 forum. These cameras are not meant to be compared in any way though. Yes the HVX shoots SD and can be downcoverted to SD and will look nicer than the DVX shooting in SD. But the whole point and reason why it costs nearly twice as much as so you can shoot HD in 720p and 1080i.

Right, however, unless you’re giving your tape to a broadcaster, there’s no point in have the HD now, right? Because for DVDs it doesn’t matter.
Do you think it’s worth getting an HD camera now if I won’t be filming in HD until they come out with the new DVDs? Or do you think I should buy the cheaper camera now and in two years when HD becomes more popular, buy an HD camera?
Because they keep coming out with better things… I don’t know why I find this such a hard decision. Do you think the HVX will still be a great camera in 5 years?

Plenty of point in having HD now. You can provide a way sharper looking SD version from an HD source than starting with SD. And you’ll be future proofing all your current work for that day in the future where HD will be required. 5 years is decades in camera time so can’t really say on that one but the HVX200 looks more future proof than say a 1080i HDV camera does.

I think I’m going to go with the DVX. Seeing as how I’m a 1st year film student, I don’t think I have the proper experience nor knowledge to utilize the HD camera to its’ fullest. Instead when I graduate, there might be something better out there and I’ll be more experienced and ready to handle a good camera!
