As most file based camera formats in use today would have to be de and re-compressed to ingest only a section, thereby losing a generation- this makes plenty of sense to me vs. tape-based legacy formats. On the one’s that aren’t that way you can still mark a specific range to ingest:

What’s in the compound clip? Video from cameras, is there an MP3 in there or an H.264? Those can cause sampling rate conversion errors….

Doesn’t matter- the Originals will be used if you switch back to Original when you go to Export.

640×480 project would be my suggestion. Make sure the final output is what you’re gauging… If it still looks iffy try exporting at ProRes at 1080 first. Then drop that output into a new 640×480 project. The scaling should look better.

Depends what you need to accomplish. Definitely can be done all within FCPX. With Optimized Media you get high quality ProRes files you can easily use to finish the project. With Proxy you’ll get lower bandwidth ProRes that will perform a lot speedier during editing, especially on lower end Macs. And then you’ll switch back to original for the final outputs.
