I have the Io connected to the Mac Pro built-in FW800 connector on the back.

The FW800 disks are connected to a PCIe FW800 card in the Mac Pro.
I also have a eSATA card with three eSATA ports, that I use when I can.
(Mostly when duplicating disks for backup over an external eSATA/USB dock).

I was told when I bought the Io that it has to be alone on the FW800.

The hardware setup is already there.

Turned out that the client showed up with a DigiBeta… so no dubbing there.

He had a DVD, which I ripped and converted to DV50 and edited in FCP.

The footage seems to be progressive, but when I tried exporting to ProRes in MPEG Streamclip, the pixel dimensions got all wrong.

So I then exported the timeline to ProRes422 again, prior to encoding to MPEG-2 using BitVice.

OK, so using an SSD disk (in a bus-powered 2,5″ enclosure over FW800) would work just fine for me, shooting DV50 ?

Another question: would 5200 rpm be enough for DV50 and a few simoultaneous streams?

From what I understand 5200 rpm generates less heat.

If you are using bus-powered (FW800) enclosure, what brand/model do you use?

I used macsales/OWC up until last year, when the enclosure started to fail on me, not showing the disk content. (The disk itself worked fine in an externa SATA-dock).

We’ll stay in SD, since that is our default format.

Downconverting to DV50 is perhaps one way to go? But what about going from progressive to interlaced?

And if so, what tool does the best job?

Thanks for your tip.

I managed to solve the problem within FCP.

Select the clips with wrong settings and make them offline (and delete the media).
Right-click on any of the already selected clips in the bin and choose Clip settings from the context menu.

Select what you wish to capture (in my case Video and A1+A3).
Then choose Batch capture. The L&T window opens and your clips are transferred with correct settings.

Not sure why, but when I exported the AIFF to the Desktop instead of to my project disk (FW) it seems to have worked just fine.

The Qio-E34 comes with PCIe adapter for Expresscard/34. However, my feeling is that this slot on my MBP 15″ is not at all that stable that you have with USB or FW.
Since it’s eSATA, I guess the speed would at least not be slower than the Duel.

The disadvantage is that the Qio requires external power, where the Duel is bus-powered. You have already too much gear to carry along on location. 🙂

The idea of buying a used MacBook has crossed my mind. However, the ads I’ve found so far does not show if the computer does have this PCMCIA slot. What model should I look for? And I guess I’ll have to run Tiger on that machine, since all iBooks are PPCs…?
