    Wow, ProRes422HQ?

    That seens way out, given the original format…

    Normally we shoot DVCProHD (with a HPX500) and our master files are of course DVCProHD. Have never thought of transcode – ProRes seems to be less compressed, but both XDCAM EX and sure enough DVCProHD are already compressed.

    So for this project I think I will transcode to both ProRes422 and XDCAM EX 422 (50 mbit).

    So, we’ve ordered the AU-XP1D, that has USB3.

    Anyone using it and can tell if you can use a self-powered USB3-hub?

    The reason is that you can find cheap laptops with two USB3, but to gain speed, you should connect your offload disk and the card reader over USB3.

    My idea is:

    Computer -> USB3 hub -> card reader (2 cables) and offload disk (one cable).

    Will this work?

    The issue is offloading, which works just fine if the offload disk is formatted exFAT.

    Actually, we are still on FCP 7…

    And no PC, offload is now done on an old MBP with the Express32 slot and the Duel P2 adapter.

    But I am considering moving to PC (using the Panasonic P2 card reader with USB3), since a new PC laptop would be cheaper than a new MBP, with TB and USB3.

    But the PC laptop would then have to have 3 USB3 ports, and then it gets quite expensive…

    I’m in the same situation, since our Duel adapter most likely has stopped working.

    Which one should we choose?

    The USB3 card reader from Panasonic (works on both Mac and PC, but occupies 2 USB3 ports)

    Or

    The TB card reader from Sonnet, that works only on 10.9.5+ and is Mac only

    The latter would have us to buy a new MBP, the former can be used on a (much cheaper) PC, but with at least 3 USB3 ports…

    The offload disk cabinet features USB3, eSATA and FW800 (which we use).

    What would you suggest?

    Thanks Dave and Shane – you had me there.

    This will be a totally new thing for me – but I guess I will have to find the best app for the job, place all the transcoded clips in a separate folder (with the original names and a suffix) and then start re-linking… Manually, I guess.

    But thme main thing remains – what tool to use?

    I was hoping you would suggest the other way around…

    So, what’s the best eay to go? Compressor? Episode?

    I hope I can use the final film – or are we talking about de-interlace every single footage file here?

    Yes, SD is interlaced. And is 90 percent of the film.

    Hence the question if anything can be done with the HD footage (which is progressive).

    Oh, sorry!

    It will most likely end up on the web.

    The reason for the mixed footage is that some of the parts was taken from another project, when we had made the shift from SD to HD.

    Of course it is 720×576. But since it is widescreen, the ref movie plays at 1024×576.

    I guess the best thing would be to use either Episode 6 or perhaps Compressor and transcode the 720P50 footage to SD….?
