Never use your system disk as video disk.
Also, the free space on the video disk should not go under 10 per cent of the total volume.
That’s the only help I can give you.
One option might be to delete all render files (using the Render Manager tool) and re-render the project. This will flush your undo queue.
You could try de-fragmenting the video disk, using third-party software. (Although OSX is claimed not to suffer from file defragmentation).

And scratchdisk is RAID1 over FW800.
The timeline plays without renderijg, but I guess I will simply have to render to have full A/V sync.
Thanks for your feedback, Dave. Much appreciated!

January 21, 2015 at 11:56 am in reply to: Final Cut Studio 3 – stay with Lion, go to Mt Lion or even Mavericks?Hi Shane,
You nailed my question – from what you say it looks like I could go to 10.7 and even 10.8 on an EXISTING system, with my FCP 3 intact?
The reason is that a number of other programs, plugins, etc are being not supported in 10.6.8. I must go to at least 10.7.
On my home iMac I did upgrade to 10.7 and from what I can tell, FCS 3 seems to work well.
So, on my office iMac (only used for backup editing) I figure I could go from 10.6.8 to 10.8, by just run the Mt Lion installer?
Or should I do it in two steps – first 10.7 (with all updates) and then go to 10.8? -
Shane,
Thank you masses for the instructions. However, I really want this to work out and some of the instructions are still a bit unclear to me…
Can you perhaps clarify a bit, being a little more detailed in what to do?
What puzzles me is that you suggest ProRes422, but the HD is DVCProHD? But perhaps mixing ProRes422 and DVCProHD is no worries? (Not sure that Compressor can transcode to DVCProHD).

Now – have anyone succeded in installing FCP 7 onto Mt Lion or Mavericks running in Parallels?
I’m forced to update my production machine into 10.7 – leaving my current Fusion 3,x unusable.
I have purchased Parallels and successfully managed to import my existing Windows 7 guest operatiing system – complete with all installed apps. Hoorray!
Now I’m curious if I would be able to intall FCS 3 on any of my virtual Lion, Mt Lion and Mavericks? A quick try tells me I have no VRAM – increasing the video RAM in the virtual machine settings did not help. Perhaps it’s as simples as that – virtualization would not give you direct access to the hardware memory.
