  • Dubbing Beta SP – which codec to use?

Posted by Niklas Wikman on December 10, 2012 at 10:40 am

So, there’s a client that wish to make a copy of a Beta SP tape. We have the UVW-1800P deck and the Io HD.

We connect our video disks over FW800 (normally shooting DV50 over P2).

Will ProRes 422 both be good enough for dubbing, thus transfer over FW800?

I can use eSATA too, and not just FW800.

    Thanks,

    Niklas

    Hi Niklas

ProRes 422 will be fine for Beta SP capture – you should be OK capturing to a FW 800 drive as that can handle a stream or 2 of HD ProRes, so Beta SP is well within
    limits.
If you have eSATA too then that will make doubly sure the drives are fast enough but FW should be fine for SD ProRes

Use the component out of the UVW for best quality. The ioHD has all the connections you need for this (analogue audio and timecode)

    Should all be fine.

    best wishes

if possible use the eSata connection for the drives.
as both IoHD and drives are using the same FW bus/controller this will be the bottleneck of your setup.

    prores422 will do fine.

The hardware setup is already there.

Turned out that the client showed up with a DigiBeta… so no dubbing there.

He had a DVD, which I ripped and converted to DV50 and edited in FCP.

The footage seems to be progressive, but when I tried exporting to ProRes in MPEG Streamclip, the pixel dimensions got all wrong.

So I then exported the timeline to ProRes422 again, prior to encoding to MPEG-2 using BitVice.

    Thanks for your help!

I have the Io connected to the Mac Pro built-in FW800 connector on the back.

The FW800 disks are connected to a PCIe FW800 card in the Mac Pro.
I also have a eSATA card with three eSATA ports, that I use when I can.
(Mostly when duplicating disks for backup over an external eSATA/USB dock).

I was told when I bought the Io that it has to be alone on the FW800.

    Thanks for your help!
