yeah, i’d say test it.
if it feels good on your older machine, then go for it.

things to consider:
exports, and moving files around will take a lot longer.
how will your system cope w playing 2 streams? (simple composting, 2-cam situations)
do you like to scroll through your rushes a lot? test that, it can be taxing

if you want to go to a lower-res for offline, ProResLT 1280×720 is a nice way to go
then you really do see some savings.

i don’t use Share, so cant help solve the specific problem,
but you could step around it, and export a QuickTIme move, same settings,
then run that file through Compressor.

OR, export with Quicktime conversion, but that ties up FCP a bit more.

are you saying that when you open the original file in Quicktime it plays out of sync?

can you open it in Sony’s XDCam transfer software?

no way!
certainly not faster, the upscale is very slow.
well it i if you do it right, and set the settings in the frame controls pane to best.
if you don’t do that then there’s almost no point in using compressor, might as well stay in FCP

alternatives to compressor include MpegStreamclip, and as mentioned Resolve.
when said why not use Resolve for the upscale, i meant just bring the raw shots into resolve, and use it like you would compressor,
as a batch converter.

i think Shane was referring to 4/3 footage.
personally, i would go for 1920×1080, and pad the sides with black.
there’s a setting for that in the Geometry pane in Compressor.

if your footage is anamorphic SD, then simple 1920×1080 will work.

yes you can do this, in fact i think it was suggested in your previous thread:

you need to Media Manage the sequence.
select the sequence in the browser, and chose Media Manage from under the file menu
(ori right click on the sequence and chose Media Manage)

use COPY mode
add handles,
request a new project.

i reckon 5 second handles is way too much especially if you are finishing,
12 frames might suffice.

something that want mentioned in the previous thread is the idea of using Resolve for the up-res of the individual shots rather than compressor.
as Michael mentioned it does a good job of that, and would be a lot faster than compressor, i suspect.

if you are taking this into a grade, then 422 would be the minimum,
LT wont be good enough.

your previous edits wont go out of sync.
at least they shouldn’t.
you could easily test this, in a copy of your project of you were feeling more cautious.

if you match frame the multi into the viewer, you will bring up the current re-synched version, so maybe avoid that.

a safer way might be to copy the multi, re-sync it, give it a new name,
and cut that version back into the timeline.
