in the past, i’ve done it by simply running software update.
    have you tried that?

  • “dominance is upper (odd)” so the clips are interlaced.
dominance of none would indicate progressive

” QT video settings are using DVCPRO HD 1080i60 for compressor”

probably interlaced, unless you change any field settings

interlace artefacts appear on computer screens as horizontal “combing”
you’d see it more on fast movement

you DONT see it in FCP as it by default only shows you one field at a time.
you can see it in FCP on a freeze frame, and if your canvas or viewer is set to 100%
(maybe HD will show interlace at viewer or canvas size of 50%, I’m not sure)

    this is an FCPX question.
it needs to be posted in the FCPX Techniques FOrum

  • i’m seeing a fair bit of this since i started using the more recent computers with the “western” Operating Systems.
i thought it was our frame rate of 25 not syncing with the refresh rates of the screens.
we also saw it when we used a projector as a second desktop,
so we wound up screening from Quicktime rather then FCP.
    we never found a solution.

December 30, 2015 at 2:22 am in reply to: Mixed SD and HD footage – what to do?

“But I do get moving artifacs, or rather a sense of “film”. I guess thus is because of the default frame rate.”

could be you haven’t rendered it yet.
remember to go to your sequnce’s settings, video tab, and set Motion to “Best”

get the Nattress plugin, it. works in FCP.
nest your sequence, by dragging it from the browser into a new sequence with the same settings,
and apply the filter to the nest

December 27, 2015 at 2:33 am in reply to: Need Advice: Not credited in the final project.

i agree w John, if you are friends, you should be able to talk it out.
i doubt very much you’ll ever see any money, although it would be great if you did.
i mean did then clip have a budget? if not, then don’t expect anything.

however if you did the work, you should get the credit.
if your freind says ‘Yes, but i told you what to do”
well, that’s why he gets the Director credit.

December 17, 2015 at 4:30 am in reply to: Suggested HD Format/resolution for 16mm silent film

i think for 16mm, you wont get much from 3k that you’d get from 2k.
the resolution would not be there, i suspect.

of course a fair bit depends on your delivery format.
for a TV project i worked on a couple of years ago we went from our 16mm neg to ProRes4444
4444 was requested by the colour grader.
frame size was 1920×1080, and in our case i think we went full-frame, stretching the image out, to be squished back in post. (i could be wrong on this)

in any case your scan or telecine should defintily be a one-to-one frame rate.
one frame of film to one frame of video, or scan.
then each frame is clean and whole, and you can deal with the playback rate in post.

December 17, 2015 at 12:43 am in reply to: Editing a trailer – what file formats to ask for?

a certain amount depends on if you are delivering the FINAL trailer,
or of you are just cutting it, offline, then having it re-conformed.

my guess, you are creating the final.

i’d ask for a Prores 422 or ProresHQ of the final graded film,
    1920×1080
if the film has substantial use of graphics, or subtitles, ask for a textless version.

as everybody else mentions, you need stems of dialogue, effects, & music.
for web delivery, stereo would be ok
you can also ask for the un-dipped music, or the original music files if that doesn’t exist.
this means that if you want to use some music that has been dipped under dialogue or whatever, you wont be fighting that.

December 13, 2015 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Audio Sync (Timecode Edit)

your client probably doesn’t have the timecode you are referencing

when you export from FCP you might be keeping the original TC you might not,
you’d have to be exporting as a quicktime move, audio only to keep the TC

but when you convert it to MP3, you loose the TC.
the file you sent your client most likely has TC starting at zero.

so you have to set something up on your end that can reflect that.

one way would be to put your original video clips into a timeline, and add a timecode generator filter to them,
    that aways starts at zero.
be aware that if you cut them at any point, the TC will re-set to zero,
but it’s just to get the required clips, so you can work with that.
