so why dont you just use the widescreen filter?

dont get what you;re trying to do with the borders.
if you ‘d like some colour bg, jut put the colour generator behind the clips
(It’s in the “Matte” section of the generators)

no easy way to do this.

quickest way i can think of is to grab everything in your timeline,
drag to a new bin.
sort bin by “type” and delete all transitions,
export a batch list,
open in spreadsheet app, like excel.
all items there are numbered.

if its just picture you’re interested in, and you have only one track of video,
then you can make an EDL, and open that.
all events in an EDL are numbered,
but a transition counts as 2 event 🙁

not if you select “Base Media File Names on: CLIP NAMES” in MM

but MM will export just the parts of the clips you have used plus whatever handle you;ve requested.
this may not match the duration of your subclips.

if you use MM or Batch Export to export the subclips from hte browser,
there is no simple way to easily reconnect your sequence to those clips.
reconnect used file name to reconnect.

oh, hang on, here’s an idea:
MM your sequence,
base media file names on CLIP NAMES.
request a new project.
you’ll get a sequence where the clips are truncated, and the file names reflect the clips names

ALSO batch export your browser subs.

then reconnect your MM’ed sequence and direct it to the Batch Exported clips.

FCP will see the same names and reconnect.
you will get a warning saying the durations are different, but once FCP latches on to the Batch EX files, it will then reference TC, so all should be right.

one problem will be if you have use the same sub more than once in the seq.
MM will create 2 files called “Clip Name” and “Clip Name 1”
you will have to connect those ones manually.

what you need to do is not rush.
after you create your subs,
batch export them.

thinking laterally:

open the shots in Cinema Tools, and conform them to 24fps, or 23.98 i suppose, which is what 24p is

this will slow them down slightly, but you will have no motion weirdness at all,

and with chopper shots, the slight slowing down could be good.

as others have said, fcp is an editing app,
not an fx app.

it can be used from anything from your home movies to a $100 million feature
avid is much more widespread for features

on the features, they send their fx out to other specialist who create those,
then cut them into the film, using avid, fcp, whatever

for muzzle flares, etc,

collect all your stills in one bin,
then use batch export.

when i’ve done his i actually make freeze frames from the clips first.
this has 2 advantages:
one is that there’s no chance of the frame “drifting” from the chosen one like there is if the clip is “live”
two is that i can re-name the freeze to represent that particular frame/image.
you cant do that with a master clip without all instances of it changing, too.

then i batch export the whole bin with whatever settings i want.

capturing as PAL seems the best way to go.

do you need to view the clips on a broadcast monitor?
what are the mpegs for?
if not for broadcast, then you are ok, surely?

actually, you CAN change most of a sequnces settings even if there are clips in it.
only one will NOT change, and that’s the Frame Rate.

So if you need to change from PAL to NTSC, say, you;re out of luck.
But if you need to change from DV PAL to DV Uncompressed, all’s well.

Josh, when you say the audio “starts later” do you mean that when you drag or edit the clip into the timeline, the audio is physically displaced?
i have seen this happen before.

in that case the problem was that the video clips didn’t have a REEL #.

when we gave them reel#’s they behaved properly.
