What router do you use?
I have 4 decklink systems that work fine through a Network RS-422 router. In fact one of them even works as a DDR under external RS-422 control.

It must be something about the cable pin-outs. The cable connecting the decklink to the router that is.

My observation used to be.

FCP is more capable, less trustworthy,
Avid is more trustworthy, less capable.

In the FCP 3/Avid 10 days. Things ave changed somewhat after Adrenaline and FCP 4/MacOSX days.

And in one of these endless comparison debates at this and other forums, someone once wrote…

Date FCP, marry Avid.

And the debate goes on…

If you open an FCP XML in any text editor you’ll see why it can’t be opened in Excel. It looks just like a web page looks when you view it “as source”

Slow? How slow?

Use the fast encode options. Anyway, Compressor will give you a separate audio and video files. If you need a combined (multiplexed) mpg then niether Compressor nor Quicktime MPEG-2 export will do it.
And by the way, Quicktime MPEG2 which you refer to as MPEG2 in FCP 5, and Compressor export are both the same engine internally.

If you want quick DVDs, why not use iDVD? On a DP G5 you can get encodes at 1:1. It doesn’t get faster than that. If you have a 40 min program, it will never take you less than 40 min to layoff to tape. making a DVD in iDVD can take less than 40 min depending on your system.

Incidentally iDVD uses the same compression engine as Quicktime and Compressor.

Although Apple is offering PCI-X machines at the store, I’ve just been told that is one were to really select this option all one gets is a regret letter. Since I’m not in an area that one can buy from the online store, I can’t check for sure.

Also of interest to PCI-X card owners is a device to convert PCI-E to PCI-X so one can effectively use a PCI-X card in a PCI-E slot.

I’m not entirely sure of this and someone who knows can say for certain, but …
If one were to ‘combine’ the R-Y and B-Y outs into one and take the Y as one and then ‘shoe-horn’ these into a S-video jack. Y as Y and R-Y and B-y combined into one as C you should have Y/C.

Right? Again, I’m not sure. In fact I’m not even sure if tryong this out would damage your SP card.

This blinking problem was reported by me as well. For the HDPlus.
In my facility, we have two HDPlus with ref not connected as this blinking issue refuses to go away. Some driver release fixes it for some time, and then a new driver breaks it.
Its been this way from Drivers 4.x till 4.8.1.

The ver 5.0 and 5.1 were supposed to have fixed this. But we haven’t upgraded yet so I cannot be sure. The downside of not connecting ref is we can make DigiBeta and DV dumps, but not analog Beta as these tend to drift if no ref is connected.

Agreed.

I have made captures from a DVW 2000, DVW 500 and a J-30 all to the same system via SDI and viewed them side by side. No differences discernible. The J-30 does have its timecode quirks and one sometimes finds a clip reported as having a time code break only to play it from a DVW 500 and capture it correctly. At other times, the same clip that is supposed to have a TC break has none when one retries. Very funky.

But for the price,the J-30 cannot be beat. And if you don’t have a central router or patch bay, it is small and light enough to carry from suite to suite. Very sweet. And a single BNC cable carries video and audio – digitally – into FCP.

So with a J-30, basic BM card, fast enough Mac, and storage to match, you’ve got a ‘online’ system that can give the big boys a run for their money.
