XRaid will NOT work with a Quad G5???
We were just about to buy a new Quad 2.5 G5 to update our Dual 2.0, when I was informed by my reseller that the XRaid that I am currently using will not be able to be connected to the Quad at this time due to a PCI-X vs. PCI-Express slot issue. Do any of you out there have an XRaid hooked up to a Quad? It seems bizarre to me that this would be an issue, but it seems Apple is not shipping a fibre card to connect these 2 devices yet…
Anyone know anything?

That’s the really big issue with the new Dual Core machines, everything that’s out there now, at least from a hardware standpoint, doesn’t work with them. You need to get all new cards for the machines.
I haven’t heard of a Fibre Channel card yet for the newer machines. I’ve actually recommended to several clients they purchase the PCI-X Dual 2.7 now and wait on Dual Core until next year when the Intels come out.
There’s no guarantee that the PCIe products you purchase today for the Dual Cores will work in next year’s Intel machines. I’d just as soon wait these machines out and stick with something that is very reliable right now and jump on the Intel machines next year.

Actually, I just went to Apple’s online store, selected the Quad Dual Core machine and they do offer a PCI Express Fibre Channel card for $599. So the card is out there, your reseller may not know about it.

Yeah, I saw that too and told him. The website says that they ship in “about 2 weeks”, but he said that they aren’t actualy shipping any of them. Unfortunately it seems that the dual 2.7 is not available either, at least from their website. Also, ALL the G5’s listed on the apple website now only have the PCIe slots, so anyone buying a new G5 will have the same problem.
I can’t really believe this. Very wierd.

All the Dual Core machines, yes. This topic was widely discussed on this forum when the machines were first announced.
The Dual 2.7 is still a PCI-X machine.

The apple PCIe fibre card is at least 2 weeks out to the general public, I was told the atto PCIe card should start shipping on monday

i would guess this may be a foreshadow of things to come with the intel machines and ‘legacy’ issues. i totally ‘get’ the switch to pci-exress, but a legacy slot would have been useful. the thing is – the quads are made for us. for the editors, compositors, graphics people, etc – not the web surfers. we have the fibre cards, the capture cards etc – what we need is the speed. what a strange relationship Apple maintains with pro users: if you make money off the machine, you should always spend money at every turn for the machine.
i bought a decklink card that i use pretty much for monitoring only as i do ‘offline’ in SD. when i bought it i figured…hey i could use this thing forever…

Where could I find one of these Dual 2.7 G5’s? I guess I could check e-bay, but it doesn’t seem that apple is selling them anymore. Also… I’ve been a bit confused regarding “Dual” and “Dual Core”. According to the apple website:

It would appear that we have 2 “Dual” systems and one “Quad”. Is the “Quad” the same as “Dual Core”? It also appears if you scroll down that all these new models have the PCIe slots.
Where could one purchase an “older” Dual 2.7?

Yes, Apple is selling them. Go to the G5 page on the store, then look in the upper right of the page. There a link with “Need a PCI-X machine?” that’s where the Dual 2.7 is hiding.

They’re all “Dual Core.” that is what the processors are, Dual Core, that is, two processors on one chip if you will. So a “Dual” machine has one of these chips. The Quad has two of these chips.
