What you see in the Canvas is set as per the ‘RT popup’ settings on the left of the timeline.
Set it to ‘High’ and the timeline will play back High quality or full quality.

Black are the fastest. They go up to 1 Tb.
Green takes the least power and has variable rpm. They go up to 2 Tb
I’ve used both and found them to be great.

Blue are good performance but go up to 750 Gb.

You need to get the Mac version of XDCam Transfer. It makes .mov files encoded with the XDCamEx codec, one each clip. These open and can be edited in FCP. No need to log and transfer. Drag and drop them into FCP and edit away.

Each clip carries the name of the original clip and all metadata is preserved and embedded into the QT.

When you upgrade or install a new version of FCP, all its settings are reset. So, a lot of your sequence settings, playback settings, RT settings are reset. You may have set them in FCP 6 in such a way that renders and playback of effects laden shots were affected in a certain way.

Which is why, when you went back to FCP 6 everything went back to normal. Also, you opened a project created in a previous version, in FCP 7. That too affects things.

And, for a while capture card makers will have drivers that aren’t up to speed in the effects playback department. So bear with that. It might help to inform the card manufacturer with a specific issue. They often may not reply you but they will certainly try it out and even quietly correct it in the next release. Has happened to me.

Is it perhaps that you are trying to import a movie shot on a Canon T1i while the movie is still on the memory card. Meaning have you connected the camera to the system and are trying to edit a movie while its still in the camera?

20 fps (yes twenty fps) h.264 is what Canon T1i shoots, and permission denied would be if the movie was still on the card in the camera?

Just wild guessing.

Talking of failures. I have to warn you about a spate of recent Seagate drive failures. I’ve seen 3 SATA internal Barracuda 1 Tb drives fail within days of each other. The dreaded 7200.11 drives.

And last week, I bought 4 new 1.5 Tb eSATA Seagate FreeAgent Extreme drives connected to a MacPro via a Sonnet Tempo e4p card. 3 of these drives failed over 3 weeks, but after I had done a XDCam transfer of over 4 Tb on them.

Symptoms excessive click and whirr. Mac hangs. Force quit and restart – drives don’t mount any more.

So beware with Seagate drives. If they fail like that, there is no protection even in RAID5.

Or for better performance use HDV – Apple Intermediate Codec.

With HDV – AIC you will lose original time code

Every easy setup has standard sequence settings. So when you select an easy setup and do file > new sequence, you get a sequence with settings saved in that setup. So if you create a new easy setup where the sequence settings are for an 8 track sequence all dual mono and set up audio as 1 > 1, 2 > 2 and so on, you’ll always have a new sequence with the correct settings.

But, to be fair, having the manual online means it is completely updated all the time. And Apple can add chapters, explanations, update features as they’re added etc. And we don’t have to have outdated manuals on our systems.

By the way, is there a help menu in FCP 7? Does that not take you to a pdf any more?
