What are your sequence settings? And how were the clips you are using brought in?
Basically, if you import your sequence and clips have the same codec settings, you shouldn’t have to render at all if you’re just playing video.

How are you making the QTs?
There are two basic ways:
File > Export > Quicktime Movie
File > Export > Using Quicktime ConversionThe first creates a reference movie, unless you select the checkbox “Make Movie Self-Contained” in the Save As dialog box. But both of these types of QT movies will be “FCP Quicktimes”, for lack of a better term. You’ll notice by the modified QT icon.
Use the second method for a movie that opens through QT.

Got it. Thanks!
I do wish though that you could set panning by Track level, rather than only by Clip.
That way, new clips added to a track would automatically pan Left or Right.

Yes, I tried both the Character Palette, and also in the options/attributes bar that runs along the top of the app. Neither works.
This same method works fine in PS. I am now reduced to keeping both apps open, and selecting my font in PS before going back to AI.
I am originally a PC person, so I was hoping there was something different about the Mac I was missing. So far, it seems only Mac users experience this, so I guess this is one “feature” that isn’t in the Mac version. 😛

I’m using AI CS4 on a mac. And it definitely does not work as you describe (which is how it should work).
Someone on another forum suggested a corrupted font cache file. I ran applejack to fix, but still nothing.
Also, supposedly more than 150+ fonts can cause this too, but I don’t think I have that many loaded (unless you count every variation of each font).
In any case, very frustrating. And PS has no problem with this.

Joe,
Well, sorry, this isn’t an answer, but I have the same issue.
It’s not just motion templates. It’s any motion project. It is far faster in the end to render from Motion at the same codec as the timeline, then import into FCP.
I think it has to do with the the “link” between FCP and Motion. I say this b/c the same problem exists in the Adobe Suite. Importing After Effects into Premiere and rendering is far slower than rendering a video file out of AE and importing into Premiere.
So, no solution to your problem, just a theory as to why.

OK, I think I’ve found the problem.
I brought up the Audio Mixer. Channels 1 and 2 are set to “0” or center. So I panned them Left (-1) and Right (1).
Question: Does anyone know how to set this as the default? And also, so that it is global and affects all clips on the timeline?
Thanks!

As far as I can tell, this is just the reality of FCP. Even with hardware like an AJA Kona card, getting real time in FCP just isn’t possible once you get into filters or layers.
Can someone please correct me on this if it’s not true? I would love to be wrong about this!

Blackmagic makes the most affordable in/out cards. AJA is best, but pricey (no surprise there).
