I would imagine that the most economical way to go is to get a used camera that perhaps has a broken lens or something, that you can get for practically nothing and then just abuse it as a capture device.

But, Sony added a nice feature to some of its miniDV cams where you can use the docking station to dub from composite sources directly into the computer via firewire, bypassing the tape and heads. So if you’re dubbing analog source footage other that miniDV, you don’t wear down the heads. Of course this won’t help your problem if you’re footage is coming from miniDV tape itself. But it’s a nice extra feature to consider if you’re looking at the bigger picture.

Well, I rebooted and reimported and the second time it worked fine.

Even though I was running a browser during import, I think it might have been more that I was importing to the OS drive, I forgot to switch the setting for the HDV import settings(i usually work with the DV importer app).

So the second time I also set it to import to the external USB drive, and had no programs running. The strange thing is that there were no dropped frames on yesterday’s import, but I guess that is not the only thing that can go wrong in an import.

had exact same problem, file was cmyk, i changed it to rgb, and it imported like butter.

Also, does anyone use the Shuttle Pro and is it worth the $90 price tag?

I plan on getting a final cut keyboard, so is this overkill, I know it served a specific function, but people got along fine without it. Is it a big workflow timesaver?

I was going to ask if OWC made sold good upgrades. I guess you’re happy with the RAM since you’re suggesting it? Have you tried their RAIDs?

Yeah, don’t need a 30″ but do need HD, so I guess I’m going to have to look elsewhere…someone suggested the Dell 2408WFP. Would anyone recommend that one?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I tried this too. It used to show up before, but now it is no longer recognized at all. It doesn’t show up as an option anymore.

I think it is probably a wacky Windows glitch that happened due to poor programming on the part of Logitech. It’s so easy to screw things up and extremely difficult when you don’t understand doing Registry fixes, how to get things back to normal. When things slow down, I’ll probably just try a System Restore, or use my disc image backup to flash back to my clean slate installation.

It’s just one of those things that takes an afternoon.

You make sense, I suppose I am trying to gauge what my expectations should be, as I don’t really have any…yet.

I am transitioning to FCP from a windows platform and would like to hit the ground running so to speak. I’ve used Sony Vegas primarily, but also Avid MC to some extent.

I guess I would be upset if I paid $1000 and just got the same speech I could have listened to through lynda.com tutorials for example.

I think I’ve made up my mind that it is probably not worth the $ paid, for my instance as I do not have $100 bills to burn.

Apologies if this thread unleashes a firestorm. The intention of the thread was not to convince anyone that FCP is better than Avid, but rather that FCP is at the same level professionally as Avid and that their are other factors that might influence one’s decision to go with one or another. Actually, as you stated Nicolas, it is common for production companies to both FCP & Avid & other software suite combinations.

I just need to change the perception of a person who doesn’t have all of the pertinent information. I don’t have the bias that they have, so for me (the editor), flexibility is good, etc.
