Tim,
Yes, you should always take hype with a grain of salt. There is no magic bullet to all of life’s problems and I don’t think FCP claims to solve all of life’s problems. IMO, it’s kind of silly to judge an editing system solely on whether or not it can process a particular codec. If you had researched FCP, you would have found out that it doesn’t deal directly with AVCHD, but requires transcoding. Eventually, if AVCHD becomes popular enough with the FCP user base (squeaky wheel gets the grease) I’m sure it will be included in future releases. Until then, we all have to transcode. There are plenty of other reasons that people like FCP and ways that it makes life easy. That said, I’m annoyed that we can’t handle these files as easily as other codecs on Mac, and hope that this “issue” is resolved sooner than later. I just got a GH2 and I’m having some issues too.

Good stuff. Actually we are trying to decide between the Sony and the Lumix GH2. Both are receiving pretty overall great reviews. Both use AVCHD. In future, hopefully we’ll get faster SD card bandwidth capable of handling a codec that doesn’t need transcoding.
I like the fact that the Sony form factor is more like a video camera. I have heard people complain about moire.
We’ll see what they decide on. It’s hard not to have buyer’s remorse a little nowadays. Just have to accept things are changing super fast.
Thanks

Thanks Henry for the confirmation of that. The more I read, the more I figured that was the case.
Are you having ANY issues with the camera so far?

Hmmm. Well, if you’re under a time crunch, I would go through and reconnect files manually to put out the fire.
Could this be the annoying trash prefs issue? Have you tried trashing prefs?
Seems like that is always a possibility when you run into strange things like this. Maybe in the upgrade, the prefs got screwy, and you need to rebuild them. Worth a shot.

So, does it say it’s reconnecting? or do you get an error?
You said “just about all the media comes up offline”. So, what did remain online. Is there a pattern between files that stayed online, and those that went offline?

Yep, Walter’s right. FCE running on non-intel chips doesn’t support AVCHD.
This is all part of the master plan to get you to upgrade.

are you using the lower bitrate ProRes, the new one released with FCP7? if not, you may try that out and see how far you can push it. From what I understood, this was Apple’s offline solution.

Hey Peter,
How is that workflow working for you? Once transcoding to ProRes are you running into any other problems?
I’m curious because we’re looking to start shooting with a Sony NEX-VG10 that encodes in AVCHD.
Cheers

They say that you can process tons of footage. But, maybe you’ll want to do it in smaller batches. Surely you can just pull 1/4 or 1/3 of that footage and see if it works better.
Let us know how it goes.

November 29, 2010 at 11:59 pm in reply to: Canon SLR Footage Framerate & Audio Sync ProblemI’ve been using Class 6 and haven’t had write issues, or at least that I’m aware of. Interestingly, using 720p, there was one time that the camera stopped recording at 2.85 GB around 14 mins. Perhaps this is why. Other times, I have been able to record a full 4GB file at about 20 mins or so.
