November 29, 2010 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Canon SLR Footage Framerate & Audio Sync Problem

After all this time, I have not found a solution.

I have done similar projects since then, and even with the 720p/30fps footage I still get sync issues.

I am beginning to think that the problem is with FCP. You should be able to convert anything to make it work, but no conversion technique seems to work. Nor does any sequence setting adjustment work.

That said, Canon doesn’t seem to be taking this issue seriously either.

I have not heard of these issues with the Lumix or other HD DSLR cameras. Perhaps Canon is not the best choice moving forward.

We are left in the crappy position of having to manually sync audio after editing.

I have yet to try out the $149 third party solution DualEyes…

…so can’t say if that works.

    Best of luck,

  • Somehow I missed John’s reply. So, for the record I was/am using FCP V6.

Interesting solution Miker, I’ll have to try that again. Although hopefully I won’t have to do that again. 🙂

With compression workflow, it seems the proof is usually in the pudding. You should try a few things out and see what you get. At that size, you may not be able to tell the difference or it may be very obvious which is the winner.

As far as render times, if you make your sequence smaller it should render faster.

I had a similar but probably not exact same issue with footage from a Canon T1i SLR camera with separately recorded audio track.

Here’s the workaround I would have suggested had I read your post earlier.
    1. Line up you audio track with either one of your camera angles such that it PLAYS correctly on the timeline.
    2. Mute or delete the the original audio track(s) that came with that footage on the timeline.
    3. Export timeline as ProRes such that you have a new video clip WITH THE PROBLEMATIC AUDIO TRACK ATTACHED.(hopefully now in sync)
    4. Then put that new file along with the other camera angle into a multiclip, choosing audio from your newly created file.

It’s still a mystery why both your and my problems exist, but out of curiosity which device was used to record audio? I wonder if it could be the audio recorders are the source of the problem.

    Here’s my post fyi…

I think eventually someone will figure this one out. There was no TC track with the audio. It was recorded on an M-Audio portable field recorder. It was recorded at 44.1Khz, but I’ve tried every combination of converting it to 48Khz, or changing the sequence settings to 44.1Khz. Either way I think Rafael is right that there is a problem with the file (or systemically the recorder).

The real oddity is that the waveforms didn’t line up with the audible sound of the file. In addition it went out of sync with video, 2 distinct things going on.

Anyway, I found my workaround. Just thought I’d see what everyone has to say on the issue.

Yeah, the other post seems like a different problem, but thanks for posting anyway.

    Hey Rafael,

I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with the term “TC Track.” I tried looking at the properties and only saw a Sound Track, that could be deleted, which I did, but FCP wouldn’t recognize it after that. I also tried extracting the Sound Track and saving as separate mov. This time FCP recognized it, but it was still out of sync.

    Best,

  • So, as a workaround, I just tried converting to DV and it is rendering. Since it’s web-quality to begin with, no need for ProRes.

While my curiousity conitnues as to why the Apple’s own codec wouldn’t render in Apple’s own editing software, a solution has been found.

    Thanks

Even Quicktime can convert the files. Try using ProRes to maintain quality.

Glad to have found the missing link, a PAD. Thanks Bill.

I’m usually skeptical about those auto-digitizing decks, but if it has Ty Ford’s seal of approval, I just may check it out further. 🙂
The Gracenote addition is a nice touch so long as it works. Although I bet you can’t adjust the MP3 settings and .Wav option is notably missing.

    Nice article on wye’s…thanks Jordan
