    Thank you all,
    You guys are the best.
I knew it was simple. I don’t really know how I initially found it, but I’m glad I did. Envelopes rock! (Now that I know that’s what they’re called).

Is there a way to get the pointer to set points on a single-click, or is it always a double-click?

Thanks Terje and Mike for that information.
I appreciate the lucid explanation you gave Terje.
I really just needed to hear from someone, who has actually done this, what can be achieved with USB as that is the “easiest” way for me at this point.

I think my questions are almost answered, however, I should have been a little more forthright in my original post as to what the real application is for.

Perhaps this is a stretch for a predominantly digital forum, but I am trying to “digitize” Betacam SP video(tv broadcast quality analog) while retaining the maximum quality of the video. This is the ultimate goal. This should be 720×480 @ 30fps, but one also has to consider how the color is tranferred, etc. So, since I have yet to begin filming with dv, I thought I might be able to get away with a usb analog-to-digital converter, provided that it is not compressed in the transfer, or if so, only as much as raw dv. Also, I have to figure in Vegas or maybe I can use another program just for the importing if Vegas does not do good with USB connections.

So, would this change the way either of you would have answered the original post?

  • Thanks for the advice and quick reply.
Unfortunately the quality loss was too great.
The only thing that worked quality-wise was Uncompressed AVI, however, the files size was 12GB which was way too large for my application.
I don’t think there is a good solution for this with Vegas.
Maybe womble will work, I will have to try it out.
    Thanks so much

Is there a particular reason why USB is not preferred(technically speaking).
I forgot to mention that I don’t have FireWire on my computer either.
And my main computer is a small form factor so it’s trouble trying to find cards that fit and are cheap.
if I was to invest in FireWire, can I get away with 400, or should I get 800?
    Thank for the reply

This is a good idea. Although now I have to find a cheap camcorder….
    Thanks for the reply

  • Okay, I just wanted to add that I have a basic understanding of mpeg, I frames, and so forth. Vegas has to decompress and can only edit at I frames. And therefore inorder to provide the best reconstitution of the MPEG, I am pretty sure Vegas MUST render & recompress.
So I guess what I am really looking for is the settings to provide the best possible mpeg output since I have already edited it.
