  • Help – Need to RenderEdited Mpeg2 no loss as original

    Hi,
I am attempting to edit some DVD clips I have recorded.
I have imported the files into Vegas and edited them, but I want to save an mpeg2 at the same quality.
I guess I really don’t want to re-render, but does Vegas allow you to just resave over the mpeg2 that it gets from the DVD?
If I need to render the video to save the edits, can anyone offer any guidance in the MPEG2 dialogue box so that I can maximize the quality of my output?
    Thanks in advance.

Okay, I just wanted to add that I have a basic understanding of mpeg, I frames, and so forth. Vegas has to decompress and can only edit at I frames. And therefore inorder to provide the best reconstitution of the MPEG, I am pretty sure Vegas MUST render & recompress.
So I guess what I am really looking for is the settings to provide the best possible mpeg output since I have already edited it.

“…I am pretty sure Vegas MUST render & recompress.”

It does and that’s why you’ll suffer a drop in quality 🙁
How much of a drop is acceptable is up to you.
I’ve done it before with short videos (less than one hour) and it’s been OK for me.
I’d re-render at the maximum bitrate possible (and maybe do it as a 2-pass as well). As long as it’s under an hour, you can go with a CBR of 8,000,000 (the recommended maximum).
You can avoid the unnecessary re-compression in Vegas by using apps such as Womble’s MPEG Video Wizard or VideoReDo, both of which, unlike Vegas, are smart renderers. That is, they render only the necessary portions and leave the rest as is.

Vegas will re-render when creating an Mpeg2 file. Look into software from Womble for lossles Mpeg recompiling.

Thanks for the advice and quick reply.
Unfortunately the quality loss was too great.
The only thing that worked quality-wise was Uncompressed AVI, however, the files size was 12GB which was way too large for my application.
I don’t think there is a good solution for this with Vegas.
Maybe womble will work, I will have to try it out.
    Thanks so much
