4-8GB of memory is bare minimum these days. Windows also uses a lot of memory. If you have only 2-3GB, it will be mostly used by Windows, and the O/S will be using the swap file on the hard disk a lot. Software requirements that are listed are usually a joke. They list the bare minimum it takes for the program to actually load up and run. That doesn’t take into account the usability of the program. To be safe, always double the memory that is listed. FYI…HD encoding requires a fast, modern CPU unless you have a long time to wait on every two minutes of video to finish rendering.

How much memory is in your system? If it’s only 1-2GB, then that’s your problem. 4-8GB is pretty much minimal these days, with 12GB+ DDR3 becoming mainstream.

The network render option is only available in Vegas Pro, not the Movie Studio version.

Hmm…no one uses alternatives to a mouse with their video editing workstations?

January 6, 2011 at 6:14 am in reply to: CUDA GPU not used

The CUDA performance is rather disappointing. I just tried a GTX 460 Femi 768MB, and still couldn’t get real-time encoding of 720p files with the Sony AVC codec. I even selected option to use CUDA. This is with a quad-core Q6600 at 3.0GHz. Perhaps Sony should look into adding support for the SpursEngine cards to help speed up encoding?

I would still like some advice on current cards and GPU rendering performance with Sony Vegas Pro 10. Thanks.

I’m trying to decide on my free item. I have the Vol 1-5 CD “sampler”. Are the Sound Effects just a sampler or the full set?

  • So you want to import JPG files in one second intervals? If so, go to the Preferences, Editing tab. Change the “New still image length” to 1.000 seconds.

I just received activation errors after doing a system restore rollback in Windows 7! It is a little unnerving that Sony can’t figure out another way to do these activations. The rollback kept all the software in place, but now I have to try and activate Cinescore, Sound Forge and Vegas again! Each is telling me I have too many activations!

So the CUDA is only for rendering, and not for accelerating the preview screen? I still have Vegas 8 and have been waiting for Sony to add acceleration to preview screen. Trying to work on something when preview screen only updates 4-8fps is annoying. Switching to draft mode is just a bad workaround, because the preview window is no longer showing all effects.

The Sony AVC codec doesn’t offer 2-pass encoding. Is there a reason why it doesn’t support 2-pass?
