  • Converting DV-AVI to MP4 AVC -> Blu-Ray

    I use Vegas Pro 8.0c/DVD Architect with a Canopus ADVC-300. I have a lot of old VHS and other SD footage that has been captured to DV-AVI. In the past, I had been authoring DVD, but now want to go back to the DV-AVI files and author to Blu-Ray (MP4 AVC/Dolby Digital audio). The Mainconcept and Sony AVC output templates only output AAC audio which is not supported in Blu-ray standard. I want to encode to MP4 so I can pack more videos onto one BD-R disc. What is the best workflow for converting DV-AVI to (MP4 AVC/Dolby Digital audio) to burn on a BD-R disc?

    I would use the appropriate Sony AVC template and render the audio separate as Dobly Digital AC3. If you keep the file names the same with just the extensions being different, DVD Architect will automatically associate the audio with the video when you drop the file onto a menu.

    The Sony AVC codec doesn’t offer 2-pass encoding. Is there a reason why it doesn’t support 2-pass?

    I don’t know why the Sony AVC codec doesn’t support 2-pass. The MainConcept AVC codec does.

    The Sony AVC CODEC doesn’t offer variable bitrate encoding. Two-pass encoding is only of value when you can analyze your variable bitrate decisions.. the 2-pass algorithms allow for better balancing of the variations, based not only on what’s just come, but what’s about to come.
