    February 11, 2007 at 1:40 pm in reply to: Sound Keys – More Randomness?

    Like Dan said – AE is not sentient nor is Soundkeys and you have to tell it when to switch. Dan’s stuff is spot on, but you may also simply try to flip the direction based on a fixed time interval:

    seedRandom(time%1,true)

    direction=random[0,1];
    angle=degreesToRadians(90);

    amount=thisComp.layer(“Soundkeys”).effect(“Soundkeys”)(“Output 1”);

    X=Math.sin(angle*direction)*amount;
    Y=Math.cos(angle*direction)*amount;

    [X,Y]

    This will change the direction randomly from vertical to horizontal every second. Change values as needed.

    Limit your materials to the pre-defined selections R1, R2, C1, C2. Check the manual or my MoGraph article (part VII). Works with any kind of NURBS object.

    Aplly the material to the cloner nad use the “Fix Texture” option You need to use one of the projection methods, not UVW.

    Film it, warp it, use blend modes. Has been discussed over and over. Do a search.

    February 9, 2007 at 6:32 am in reply to: mixed aspect ratios

    [gregfly] “If I do go with 4:3 –> 16:9, can I keep the DVD menu as 4:3? or would everything have to be 16:9? Or can u mix aspect ratios on a DVD?”

    You can, but I don’t recommend it. Depending on the configuration of the DVD player (which is the real culprit here), it may never switch correctly and your clients will think you messed up. Other than that I’d rather crop the 16:9 horizontally rather then the 4:3 vertically, the reason being you are less prone to incidentally cut of important information and using some simple pan&scan techniques, you will be able to make your cropped 16:9 look like it was meant to be 3:4 in the first place.

    February 9, 2007 at 6:24 am in reply to: call script with shortcut

    [chortorn] “Is it possible to call a *.jsx script from a shortcut that I will define in ‘Adobe After Effects 6.5 Shortcuts.txt'”

    Yes. Look for entries like this in your ~shortcuts.txt file:

    “ExecuteScriptMenuItem01” = “()”

    All scripts must be at the root level of the scripts folder to show up in the menu and the menu order will be used.

    [chortorn] “Is it possible to select another layer or layers from a script? How?”

    Yes, it’s possible, but off the top of my head I don’t remember any part of the synatx.

    Sketch and Toon is always a combination of the post effect and the materials themselves. There is no such thing as a Sketch&Toon material, it’s a style that affects the entire mesh/ selection the style is applied to. You wouldn’t get anything useful this way (well, you could, but you’d have to anmiate too many parameters) In that case compositing would be much more efficient. just render two versions and create object buffer mattes to isolate the objects you wnat to transition.

  • Check your manual/ help for keywords like edge weighting in HyperNURBS, the bridge tool and edge beveling. Either one of those or any combination of them all can produce results that you are after. But like Adam said, it’s not going to be automatic, you have to model and know how those tools function.
