Animate the mask shape or use the masked layer as a matte on the original layer and animate its position and rotation.

Create a stalk in a pre-comp, then deform it using Bezier Warp. You can easily tie the controls to expressions. Then you only have to duplicate everything. If you have Particular, you might also want to try my preset on my website.

9 GB free disc space may not be enough. consider this: Encore copies all files to its own “source files” directory, doubling the size of sdisk space required. Then it also creates its “Cache”, further consuming space almost 3 times the size of the disc. So in your case you’d need at least 10,5 GB free disc space to be on the safe side. The only advice in this case: Go out, buy another disc.

Try Particle Playground and create property maps for size and position. Should give you all the control you need.

Have you checked your comp with the Checkerboard preview? Sounds to me like you have no real pixels to work with. Blending modes only work on footage items. The comp background is considered transparent even though it is displayed as black or any other color you choose. So unless you add a solid at the bottom of your comp, it won’t carry over. This also would explain the differences in the look. You should however see the effect on the orange base regardless of this. To get the transparency, you probably have to unmultiply your stuff (create transparency based on brightness). This can be done most easily by using XMult(free), Knoll Unmult(free) or Walker Effects Alpha Tool(commercial)or its predecessor WE Premultiply (comes with one of the Meyer books).

Depends on what tools you have, but from the sound of it you only have AE itself. The simplest way would be to render a “tracking pass”. Add two small spheres to your spaceship, one as the emitter, the other as a direction indicator. Make the spaceship itself invisible and only render the spheres. Should be wicked fast. Then using AE’s tracker, generate info you can use. And apply it to your emitter. You may need expressions to calculate the orientation for the emitter (lookAt(source, target) should do). You have to animate the scale/ size manually, there is no way around that. If you have money, Max2AE might be an option. Perhaps you can also find some free MAXScript that will spit out data for copy&paste to AE.

Copy the masks to a solid and use this solid as a matte on top of whatever layer you like.

No, not really. What you can do is to delete all files in the sources and cache folders, then open the project and have Encore build the DVD again. The references and previews will appear empty and have the missing item icons, but once you re-open such a project, everything will be okay and Encore has re-created all the source files and caches.

February 11, 2007 at 1:43 pm in reply to: question about resolution 16:9 anamorphic

720×400 is incorrect. This would be a letterboxed cinematic format squeezed into 16:9. Just proceed according to your original plan and do your stuff at 1024×576, then nest it into a 720×576 widescreen comp for final rendering.
