If you mean some glitter or twinkle, then AE is the better solution. Most likely you simply didn’t experiment with blendmodes enough and didn’t figure in additional plugins such as Knoll Light Factory, Starglow or others in your equation. If you just mean some brightness variations, then put your shaders in the specular color and diffuse channels. The keypoint here is to have strong variations in the specular values to get the illusion of varying light reflectivity. You need the diffuse channel mainly to compensate for overbright areas.

Didn’t mean to put you off, it just strikes me as odd that someone might come up with such questions. While both apps certainly share some principles, they are different enough at first sight to file them in different categories.

Use layer shaders and animate the opacity of the individual layers.

You don’t. This has never been possible.

Umm, one is a 3D app the other a compositing program with some 3D abilities. Not sure why you cannot make out the differences. They are two completely different tools. This could turn into an endless discussion, so I suggest you download the demos/ trial versions of both apps to get a grasp of what each of them can do.

No. Wrong technique. Find yourself a Spline Wrap deformer (contained in MoGraph, DiTools and available as a standalone from Renato Tarabella) and use a Helix spline with it.

BTW, considering the amount of questions you posted, I think you are far away from building “rad” custom shaders. Sorry to be so blunt, but don’t you think you need to get down the basics first before moving on to bolder stuff?

What do you mean by “custom shaders”? You can use any shader in any channel and link their parameters via XPresso.

Check my tutoril series (part 3, I believe). The technique is the sime like when using time offset – first randomize the weight with a random effector, then manipulate all other settings with other effectors.

Tim posted a few tricks on mograph net, so tryy to search there. A common technique is to render the lines at double the resolution and then scale down. This will not completely eliminate all flicker, but due to the resampling when scaling down, a lot of it will disappear. You can also try to creaete “lines” using incidence based gradients with the Fresnel shader. Simply turn off interpolation in the shaders gradient.
