June 6, 2006 at 4:54 pm in reply to: PAL -> NTSC Conversion with synced sound?

[phillr] “I have an entire interview tape that that was shot with a PAL camera. I need this entire tape to be in NTSC. If I used After Effects to convert it to NTSC, would the sound be in sync?”

Most likely not. Anyway, even if it was, it is foolish to atempt it: You will experience noticeable cahnges in pitch and echoing artifacts. Ergo: Do your sound in – erm – a sound editing app.

No idea. Possibly you are using certain blendmodes that do not reflect adjustments (e.g. Add or Screen) because the only add up luminosity. Other than that check if any of your layers are guide layers or your alpha channel actually registers as non-transparent in the areas that you want to be affected.

June 6, 2006 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Reflecting a black object

You should balance your surface settings. What you are trying to do goes against the mathematics of raytracing. Your surfaces blow out because you are wanting them to reflect and not reflect at the same time (from the point of the rendering engine) and the overall amount of light/ energy exceeds the computed limits. Similarly your completely black cube will “eat up” all energy – it behaves like a black hole because you are basically telling the renderer to not go looking for reflections if a ray is completely empty (after all, black equates to zero) and does not carry any color information. Instead of working with absolutes you should always try to find the closest values that allow you to work within the laws imposed by the renderer – if your looks black, it does not need to be completely black. Also make sure your always adjust your surface’s diffuse values. They are most critical in solving your problems.

That is if your plugins shall make use of AE 7’s features. you can still use the older SDKs and Visual C++ as long as Adobe will maintain legacy support for plugins compiled using this.

Twixtor is okay, but I found it unsatisfying considering it does motion vector analysis. Dunno, though, that was an older version back then when we tested it. Quite possible it works much better these days.

June 6, 2006 at 5:23 am in reply to: best way to manipulate splines

[linkoping skrills] “i am looking for the best way to manipulate splines. maxon’s tutorials say to Object>Spline Object and then control click to make points. this isnt working, im having to use one of the preset variants.”

No iddea why it doesn’t work for you. Yes, it’s awkward, but it generally works.[linkoping skrills]

“if I buy it, could i transfer the license to them or have some time before registering to sell them on the idea of using it in the workflow.”

Dunno how it is where you live, but you get temporary licenses that run for 14 days or a month. It is required to register to continue working. So your idea won’t necessarily work the way you want to.

[linkoping skrills] “is the documentation and included info pretty well done?”

Check the downloadable PDFs. The printed docs are the same and since they are done by proper technical writers (here in Germany there are several degrees for Technische Dokumentation [technical documentation]), the are quite good (not perfect, but usually better than most others).

[linkoping skrills] “Does Cel render come as standard?”

There is a simple Cel shader included, but it’s not Sketch&Toon. S&T must still be paid for extra.

[linkoping skrills] “and if i bought the special deal, would there likely be a steep upgrade with that serial from buying it cheaply in the first place. a version 10 seems likely sometime soon. but its all good, you gotta love doing this-“

No. You just pay the normal upgrade price. There’s no catch.

[Simon Carlson-Thies] “Just add a text object out of the spline object menu…
either type or copy paste out of another app….”

Yepp. And even C4D 6 offered this functionality already. 🙂

June 6, 2006 at 5:13 am in reply to: smoothing a bend

    [rachelm] ”
Hello – I am trying to smooth a bend in a pipe. I’ve maxed out the height segments for the cylinder. Is there any way to apply a certain number of segments to a specific part of a cylinder? I don’t need 1000 segments distributed over the entire pipe since there is only one bend.

    I’ve uploaded an image here:

    Thanks in advance,
    Rachel”

You should greate your pipe using a Sweep Nurbs. Not only will it be more smooth (because it’s based on splines, it will create more geometry in the curved area), but also much easier to edit. also from a technical standpoint it’s better technique.(no offence)
