Dunno what your problem is… By tweaking even a single setting you switch to “Custom” in the output panel for MPEG II, so you have all the options at your fingertips to create your own preset with settings specific to your needs.

It may be possible to create a script in AE that can write out data as XML in a C4D compliant format. Would be very tough to do, though, since it seems C4D needs all this junk data in its XML files. Adding all this noise and writing the proper entities in such a unnecessarily complex file would make the script very slow. Perhaps you should suggest this as a feature request to Maxon. I can’t see why it should be impossible for them to make use of their AEC format in both directions or write a simplified XML-importer just for that purpose.

Nero is just fine, you just need to know what you are doing. The safest way is always to create an Image and burn this instead of the file structure itself. This way your sector allocations will remain intact no matter what. There are also several freeware and shareware tools that hook into the windows burning API just to do the same. If you’re looking for a no frills solution you might want to consider them as well.

Are you sure he’s using the proper type of disc preset in Nero? There is a difference in a data DVD and Video DVD due to the sector placement and sizes. If not 100% correct, players may not properly be able to read the info from the IFO files and thus find the subpicture streams.

No, not with 3DStroke. Keep an eye at the Trapcode forum, I may be posting a possible solution today or tomorrow (or never, if I completely forget ;o) ).

June 7, 2006 at 5:27 am in reply to: Making text pop with 3d glasses effect

Mmh, that may be tricky. Your problem is that AE layers don’t have any depth, hence there is no way to properly assign different depth values for each eye. The closer you get to the camera, the less precise it gets. I think the only way to get this “pop-in-my-eyes-’til-it-hurts” impression would be using a 3D program – because you’d use real 3D text with side faces, you almost automatically get a better impression of 3D (which of course is not just valid for this specific task ;o) ).

Ah, I see. Looks pretty much like what we already suggested – using the Liquify effect would definitely do the trick to create the illusion of the paint dripping. The spray strokes themselves could be created using Write-on or Stroke, treated with Roughen Edges and some mild blur and noise.

Sorry, can’t help you with the specifics. I’m no programmer myself (well, at least not beyond Java/ JavaScript and a bit of python) just in regular contact with some developers, so I just thought I’d add that bit of info about AE 6.5. dunno, VSC++ 97 sounds rather old. I believe you need at least the 2001 version these days with for Windows XP. I don’t think that the sub-version matters much – as far as I understand, the professional version only differs in the number of complementary tools (installer creator, extended Windows Media support etc.), not in the basic IDE and compiler.

It all depends, but as a mograph artist C$D is hard to pass up. maya is more for complex VFX work and character animation, so it may not be ideal for you. It also has a very steep learning curve.

Na, you’re seeing this the wrong way round. A lot of what you perceive in those clips as 3D is indeed 3D, but serious one – quality you can only get using other tools. I’m afraid AE simply “doesn’t cut it” in this area any more and if you’re serious, you should consider learning a 3D program. I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but even if you only push around a few textured planes in a 3D program (the equivalent to AE’s 3D layers), you will instantly feel an easement in your pains – it’s simply more intuitive. On the other hand AE has some nice tricks up its sleeve, but they usually play out in combination with other tools and techniques. So to make a long story short: If you can point out specific problems we will gladly help you to find solutions within the realm of AE, but we could talk about AE’s 3D on a general basis for days and still not come any closer to a solution. Perhaps one of the reasons why noone dares to write a book ;o).
