Experiencing no small degree of frustration over mastering 3-D. Granted, it’s been about a year since I picked up AE, integrating into my workflow with FCP and DVD SP, but I look at the 3-D work at MK12 and feel left behind.

Does anyone know of a book that deals with 3-D, exclusively? I have the Meyers books and the TT series, but this is all basic, rudimentary stuff – I need something that will take it to the next level.

    Thanks in advance.

Na, you’re seeing this the wrong way round. A lot of what you perceive in those clips as 3D is indeed 3D, but serious one – quality you can only get using other tools. I’m afraid AE simply “doesn’t cut it” in this area any more and if you’re serious, you should consider learning a 3D program. I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but even if you only push around a few textured planes in a 3D program (the equivalent to AE’s 3D layers), you will instantly feel an easement in your pains – it’s simply more intuitive. On the other hand AE has some nice tricks up its sleeve, but they usually play out in combination with other tools and techniques. So to make a long story short: If you can point out specific problems we will gladly help you to find solutions within the realm of AE, but we could talk about AE’s 3D on a general basis for days and still not come any closer to a solution. Perhaps one of the reasons why noone dares to write a book ;o).

    M –

Thanks – I think you’re right. Maybe I’m approaching it all wrong.

Which 3-D app would you reccomend for G5. c4D or Maya?

Short answer: Blender. You can’t beat the price. https://www.blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html

Long answer: Think about not just what you need for now, but what type of work you hope to be doing later. The investment isn’t so much the money as it is the time. C4D, Lightwave, Maya, 3D Max, Blender will all work but if you plan on working with someone that just has to have a Maya artist then it might be what you want to spend your time learning.

Also, I’m not sure what your looking to do with 3d but Shake is available as a demo. You might try it out and see if that’s what you need.

It all depends, but as a mograph artist C$D is hard to pass up. maya is more for complex VFX work and character animation, so it may not be ideal for you. It also has a very steep learning curve.

I learned Maya using their free PLE (personal learning edition), but I will have to say that I think the best bang for the buck, especially if you are a freelance solo guy, C4D seems like the best choice. I would guess that all of the major packages have a trial or disabled version for checking them out.

I have played with blender, and have seen some amazing things folks have done, but I haven’t spent the time required to make it perform. It does seem like a great option as well, so I would download it and one of the tutorials (I prefer video tutorials myself), and see if it will meet your needs. I’ll have to say that it will probably be a while before you produce the “wow” kind of work, although you can create awesomely creative abstract 3D stuff really, really soon.
