Just like with any app that uses simple frameblending: average to mediocre. It really depends on your footage. If you have AE 7, you can get slightly better results with the Timewarp effect instead of using plain AE. The only (to my eyes) perfect conversion from inside AE can be achieved using Algolith’s plugins but they are extremely expensive, slow and prone to crashes.

Lux does not calculate volume shadows. You have to duplicate your logo plate layer and use it as a mtte on the Lux layer.

[sam.mltn] “I’ve not seen another 3D package that has a shader like that. if there is one for lightwave or another app and it’s about the same price as c4d upgrade, then i might be willing to try and learn another app. I think i’ll probably end up sticking with c4d though…”

Well Sketch&Toon is available in some form for MAX (finalToon). thne there is also the Toon-Shader in Maya, complemented by PaintFX (for strokes and outlines) as wel las the Tomcat cartoon shader, which is also very powerful. For Lightwave there is Unreal and a few others, but they are nowhere near as flexible as S&T. Anyway, since some of the mentioned apps alone exceed the price for the upgrade of C4D, it is moot to consider them.

[Nicholastoth] “169 is peanuts for a plug in now a days…”

Mmh, I guess I should show you my paycheck. It wouldn’t be peanuts for me (as unbelievable as this may sound to you).

What do you mean by “interact”? AE does not have things such as reflections, proper light absorption etc. It won’t even calculate shadows correctly enough. You can build “primitives” of a series of layers in sub-comps and maintain their 3D properties by using the collapse transformations switch, but it will never look as “real” as you possibly mean it.

Look for Sweep Nurbs in the manual or take a look at the MoGraph module’s Tracer tool. Raplicator functionality can be achieved by creating arrays/ instances.

Mmh, what are you intending to do? Unless you intend to fly around, you could achieve the same result using a simple gradient plus Optics Compensation on an adjustment layer (to fake lens distortion)

    [julian06] “Hi
Trapcode’s Sound keys plug in would do the job!”

Yepp. Or if you don’t have the money, but already an audio processing app (shouldn’t be a problem, since there are even free ones these days…) create different files and use the Audio to Keyframes keyframe assistant.

I believe you need to render your transitions in Premiere. AE doesn’t really re-create those effects, it will just read the clip references. Not sure though, since I don’t use Premiere.

June 2, 2006 at 5:36 pm in reply to: AE7 Maximum RAM under OSX?

[Steve Forde] “Minor bit of pedantia – Nucleo or Nucleo Pro on OS X can consume up to 21GB of RAM on a Quad G5. Therefore, the only clarification is a single instance of AE can use up to 3.5 GB on OS X. This 3.5GB is “per” instance. On a Quad – Nucleo uses 5 additional instances of AE”

Goodness! Anybody have a spanking new Quad G5 to give away for free (along with Mac versions of my tools perhaps so I don’t need to crossgrade)? *lol* It’s great to get those insights from someone who (unlike some Mac fanboys) really understands.
