Howdy, wondering if it’s possible to create a couple of 3D layers in AE (i.e., click on the 3D box on a 2D layer) and have them interact with each other (perhaps something like a long rectangle protruding through a square that has an open middle)?

I’ve tried manipulating XYZ’s, rotations and orientations and haven’t had any success…maybe just not possible in AE?

    thanks,
    Craig

What do you mean by “interact”? AE does not have things such as reflections, proper light absorption etc. It won’t even calculate shadows correctly enough. You can build “primitives” of a series of layers in sub-comps and maintain their 3D properties by using the collapse transformations switch, but it will never look as “real” as you possibly mean it.

thats as close as you can get for a cheap 169 bucks.
169 is peanuts for a plug in now a days…

Mmh, I guess I should show you my paycheck. It wouldn’t be peanuts for me (as unbelievable as this may sound to you).

We’ll use that in contrast to other plug ins on the market — and b/c Buena Depth Cue comes with a few different (actually useful)
effects — which are actually very functional. 7 decent plug ins for less than 200 beans?

It’ll pay for itself over and over again if you’re an active freelancer or if your company pays for it.

Caveat on the “flipside” plugin in v.1.1 of that set: if you move the layer off the camera axis and rotate the layer, the backside doesn’t show when you expect. In other words, it doesn’t show until after you see the edge of the layer.

    Does that make sense?

Anyway, it works fine when the layer is in the center of the comp, on-axis to the camera.

Craig, make sure your composition is using the Advanced 3D plugin. Layers cannot interact (that is, intersect) if it is set to standard 3D. It should not be set to Standard 3D by defualt, but in case it is…

Go to Composition > COmposition settings > Advanced Tab. For the 3D rendering plugin, from the pulldown, choose Advanced 3D.

I like the idea of lights with distance falloff – why on earth are they not already available in AE? Depth cue does look like it could be pretty handy.

Aharon, was just going through some of your video tutorials last week — great stuff!!! Love the “Text Wipe On Effects” & “Film Flash”, but hadn’t yet reached the Z-scale tutorial (saw this morning that you had that one on there too).

Anyway, thanks….the Advanced 3D tab answered my posted question (without the plug-ins) – simple solution, very nice 🙂 …
