That is just the way it has always been. Once your project files is created on an FCP version, it will not easily go down one version, etc.

You can try exporting the project via XML and see if that will help your situation.

    Shane,

It’s still your popsicle RAID problem .

September 16, 2006 at 8:59 pm in reply to: Motion and Shake Together – Good AE Replacement?

I have Shake 4 – AFX7 and Motion 2, and each tool has it’s advantages. The Keyers are about this order – Motion – bottom of barrel – AFX middle of barrel – Shake – top of line.

Motion Tracking AFX lower – Shake higher
Motion Stanbilization – AFX lower – Shake higher
Particles – Shake lower – AFX – middle – Motion highest
3D – Get a real 3D program to build 3D objects and Shake doesn’t need those keyframes to use 3D space like AFX.

Compositing – AFX – bottom – Motion – middle – Shake highest (if the content is not one fixed size)
If content is all one size then Motion moves to the top. (2D only)

It’s really about your workflow and how you use the tools. If you really want to compare tools compare Shake, Combustion and AFX. They all have great keyers and Combustion has great Particles and Paint programs. You wouldn’t use a hammer to drive a screw into the wall would you?

The 867 Dual-Mirrored should work with Motion as it’s current limit to loading it is an 867 Mhz G4 machine. The ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition with 256 MB Vram is a grat card for Motion 2.

I have the Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz G4 and it runs Motion very well with the same card that has 128 MB Vram.

    Kevin,

I believe I said “Advanced Intermediate Codec” not Apple Intermediate Codec in my text. Howevert if I am inaccurate, then thanks for correcting it. What then is the Apple HDV codec in FCP 5?

In a way, FCP 5 does edit HDV natively. This is what they are talking about. Ever other edit progam can only edit the IFrame of MPEG-2, so frame accurate editing is really impossible.

Apple has designed the Advanced Intermediate Codec that allows them to turn any frame you choose by placing it under the Playhead, to be regenerated back to an IFrame for that edit. It does not change the I-P frame structure as captured and the process is very CPU intensive.

    Pretty slick implementation!

I recommend the Highpoint X4 external 4 bay (removable) with their RocketRaid 2322 PCI Express SATA II controller. That card takes one 4-lane PCI-express slot and hosts up to two external enclosures with Infiniband. The real value of this card is that it uses on-board formatting and make RAID 0-1-5 and 10 available. Typically when using the Apple DiskUtility to RAID disks into a set, they are setup by the operating system and it is very easy to loose that setup when updating the OS. With the RocketRaid card, you never loose the RAID set.

All SATA or any type of storage device requires a proper driver to work with the operating system.

Sonnet has stated that they still do not have driver for their SATA card line for the MacPro.

Yeah, CHEAP! But is cheaper always the better option. What about service? Is it really smart to buy for price alone?
