The only real Powerbook to use with FCP is a MacBook Pro 17″. It has the screen real estate and the power to work with Final Cut Pro 5.1.2.
There are lots of older G5 computers out there that can work comfortably with FCP, but slower ones need longer render times and MPEG-2 encoding times to complete tasks.
Just don’t make the mistake of starting with a older, slower Macintosh and blaming the application for it’s slower workflow.

My mistake – When I called them and inquired about this, it won’t accept PCMCIA memory cards. (P.S. I was sent there by a Panasonic dealer)

The F900 is uncompressed HD while the Panasonic cameras are somewhat compressed footage.
To do uncompressed HD you are going to need a FiberChannel RAID with 4Gb channels. Theses files are coming in at over 200 MB/sec each stream.
Depending on what version of FCP you are using but back to FCP 4, it was called FCP HD, which means there are codecs to handle those formats.
You metion a Decklink card; is it an HD 4:2:2 capture card?

When purchasing the 3.0 MacPro, you can order it with the ATI Radeon X1900 or add it into the system for $350 extra. Check out http://www.barefeats.com for more information about that ATI card.

December 21, 2006 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Recording 1080i to MacBook Pro with external storageHi,
My title says what I really needed but the question morphed into not being able to do any (x)p formats. I simply want to be able to record for up to two hours with HVCPRO HD and record it to a MBP with sufficient storage space, since 1080 is the most content to be captured frame size,

December 21, 2006 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Recording 1080i to MacBook Pro with external storage[David Saraceno] “Are you asking whether you can capture now in Final Cut Pro on the MBP to an external drive?
You can for all but pNative formats.
“
Thank you David
I was wonering if anyone around this forum has had the experience with an HVX-200 and a MacBook Pro to capture a long form show. I am also aware that you can go into Quicktime Pro and start Recording what is coming in over firewire. Just don’t know if that utilizes timecode as well.
And about the comment “for all but pNative formats”. Are you saying there is an issue capturing 1080p, 720p in 60 and 24 frames?

What do you suppose Apple will do next after this deal expires? Any thoughts or suppositions?

10.2 will not address any of the latest burners. You need to either try PatchBurn, if there is still a version for 10.2 or upgrade to 10.4.
