I have a Mac tower running OS 10.2.8 and would like to add a DVD burner within the tower. Can I use a pioneer drive – they don’t strickly say if they are Mac friendly or not?

I have a Pioneer DVR-111D running happily in a G4 MDD, OS X 10.4.8. Got it from OWC (www.macsales.com), who provide hardware installation instructions for most recent Mac models.

10.2 will not address any of the latest burners. You need to either try PatchBurn, if there is still a version for 10.2 or upgrade to 10.4.
