I want to thank those who responded to my post below, I appreciate your help. However nobody answered my question

I’m about to make the jump to a new Mac G5 Quad. Where would you suggest I buy a new system including a 30″ cinema display?

I’m not interested in buying the Mac Intel. I don’t want a refurbished Mac I’d like to buy a new one but get the best deal possible. Is Mac Mall the place to go? Any experiences with them? I’m also told that the Media 100 AJA card WILL work with FCP. That’s why I’m going this way.

Which video card would be sufficient for the 30″? What card will work with motion?

I also want to have a second bootable hard drive installed. Where should that come from? Lastly, the best place to buy 4 GB memory, and what type should I buy?

Thanks for your suggestions. I really appreciate it!

    ok

mac mall is reliable, but they may not be the cheapest.

for the best deal go to pricewatch.com and do a search for the machine you want. you will get a listing of links to various dealers etc, all ranked by price. it should be indicated whether or not the machine is refurbed.
be aware you are dealing with box shippers here, and you may have to do a bunch of configuring yourself, but it will be cheap

Yeah, CHEAP! But is cheaper always the better option. What about service? Is it really smart to buy for price alone?

    good question

just sort of as an aside, cuz it sounds like greg has decided on price alone, its always a question of time vs money…if you got the time to deal with a finicky set up, or your machine quitting in the middle of a job, then i guess you can save money

al least w apple computers, unless its some really fluky thing, they all prettty much work the same and are pretty user freindly when it comes to configuring

ther is NO WAY i would ever configure a PC for hi end video editing by my self nuh unh no how

Why assume that I’m looking at price only? If that were the case I could buy a used one off of ebay! I’m not ONLY looking for cheap, I was looking for the best place considering service, price, convenience, customer service, etc.

Has anyone here bought a MAC recently?

There’s a billion places man. SmallDog, Apple Store, Promax, CDW, MacMall, Expercom, BandH, Safe Harbor, VideoGuys, Microcenter etc etc etc. You aren’t going to get a better deal one place or another, maybe a few bucks but not much (some have free shipping some don’t). You need to find a place that has them in stock and ships today. If something goes wrong, you are dealing with Apple Care anyway. They will have a drop it off at a local qualified repair specialist that they will help you find and they’ll fix it for free if it’s under warranty. Buy Apple Care. If you are scared to set it up yourself, call ProMax they preinstall, pretest, and make sure it’s running, but you pay for that service.
